Summary of Complaint

My engine light came on and I took it to two different local mechanics and both confirmed the issue was the catalyst converter. One informed there was a recall and after some research found it was true. I called my dealership and they told me it was vin specific and that mine was not pulling up any recalls. I search on this website and indeed no recalls. This issue started at around 50k miles and they did not want to take any responsibility. It is what it is but I plan to drive the car like that as long as I can.

The contact's daughter owns a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. The contact stated that his daughter called him while at a stoplight to inform him that the vehicle lost power steering without warning. The contact informed his daughter to restart the vehicle while at the stoplight and to park the vehicle so that he could meet her. The contact arrived at the scene to inspect the vehicle and found no fault with the vehicle. The contact followed his daughter to her destination without further incident. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided a case number. The contact was also informed that a representative would call him for further assistance. The contact received a call back from a representative who left a message asking how he would like to resolve the matter. The contact had yet to respond to the manufacturer. The contact attempted to steer the vehicle to the shoulder of the highway but was unsuccessful. A fellow motorist assisted the contact in successfully moving the vehicle off the highway and onto the shoulder. THE DRIVERS SIDE WIPER WOULD NOT WORK WHEN STARTED TODAY WHILE IT WAS RAINING WHILE PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. I TOOK THE COVER OFF OF THE ESCUTCHEON ABOVE THE WIPERS TO SEE WHY THE ARM WAS NOT BEING DRIVEN BY THE MOTOR. THE ARM MOVED FREELY BACK AND FORTH ON THE WINDSHIELD. THE SHORT ARM FROM THE WIPER MOTOR TO THE DRIVE PLATE FOR THE WIPER WAS OFF. THE ARM WOULD NOT SNAP BACK IN PLACE. IT APPEARS THAT THE PLASTIC KNUCKLE HAS FAILED. WHEN SEARCHING FOR WIPER FAILURES IN THE CRUZE MOST OF THE COMPLAINTS WERE FOR THIS IDENTICAL FAILURE. MANY OWNERS WERE DRIVING ON THE ROAD WHEN IT FAILED AND I WAS FORTUNATE THAT IT FAILED BEFORE I LEFT FOR WORK AS IT WOULD HAVE FAILED WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. THERE ARE NO RECALLS LISTED FOR THIS DEFECTIVE PART. SINCE IS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE I DETERMINED IT IS BEST TO MAKE THIS FORMAL COMPLAINT. THE PART NUMBER FOR THE WIPER LINKAGE IS 95971326 AND THIS IS WHAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE ATTACHED PHOTOS SHOW THE ARM OFF IN #1 AND #3 WHILE #2 SHOWS THE POSITION WHERE IT IS NORMALLY.

WHEN PARKING THE CAR AND SHIFTING THE GEAR SELECTOR TO THE P POSITION, THE VEHICLE FAILS TO RECOGNIZE THE CAR IS IN PARK - AN ERROR MESSAGE APPEARS THAT STATES 'SHIFT TO PARK'. THE CAR WILL NOT SHUT OFF AS IT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE CAR IS IN PARK. I HAVE HAD NO CHOICE, BUT TO LEAVE THE CAR RUNNING WHILE I WENT INTO WORK SINCE IT WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO TURN IT OFF. I ENTERED A GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT AND DROVE TO THE FAR END TO PARK. AS I WAS PULLING INTO A SPOT AND SLOWED TO ABOUT 2 OR 3 MILES AN HOUR TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND EXIT THE CAR IT SUDDENLY TOOK OFF AT A VERY FAST SPEED. I COULD NOT STOP IT USING THE BRAKES. THE CAR WENT UP AND OVER A GRASSY ISLAND THAT HAD ABOUT A FOOT OF FROZEN SNOW(ICE) ON IT. THE CAR FLEW OFF THE ISLAND AND CONTINUED AT THIS HIGH SPEED HEADING TOWARD A HILL. AS THIS WAS HAPPENING I WAS TRYING TO STOP THE CAR USING THE BRAKE TO NO AVAIL. BY THE GRACE OF GOD THE CAR STOPPED ABOUT TEN FEET BEFORE SLAMMING INTO THE HILL. A TOW TRUCK WAS CALLED AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO OUR MECHANIC. UPON COMPLETION OF THE REPAIRS NEEDED TO THE ITEMS DAMAGED UNDER THE CAR I AM ABLE TO DRIVE IT AGAIN. THE MECHANIC'S INVOICE READS RUN AWAY CAR AND LISTS THESE REPAIRS: THROTTLE BODY AND /OR GASKET--REMOVE AND REPLACE & CLEAN - 1.4L ENG.TURBOCHARGER, ACCELERATOR PEDAL - REMOVE AND REPLACE - ACCELERATOR FOOT PEDAL.

THE VEHICLE TRIES TO START ON ITS OWN. WHEN YOU TURN OFF THE ENGINE, MANY TIMES THE STARTER WILL TRY TO START REPIDLY ON ITS OWN. WITH THE KEY IN THE IGNITION BUT IN THE FULL OFF POSITION. TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2014 CHEVROLET CRUZE. THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER DEEMED THE VEHICLE WAS LOSS.THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,887.

OVER THE LAST 3 YEARS, I HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUES OCCURRING. THE ENGINE OVERHEATS AND A MESSAGE THAT READS "A/C OFF HIGH ENGINE TEMP" APPEARS. THE HOSE WAS REPLACED, AND IT WAS OK FOR AWHILE, BUT THE PROBLEM HAS REOCCURRED TWICE MORE. THE ENGINE GASKET COVER HAD TO BE REPLACED AS WELL, AND LOOKS LIKE IT IS LEAKING AGAIN, AND OVER THE LAST 3 YEARS RANDOMLY, A MESSAGE WILL APPEAR THAT STATES TO SERVICE STABILTRAK. I'VE HAD A COIL PACK REPLACED AND THE MESSAGE WENT AWAY, BUT REAPPEARS EVERY NOW AND THEN, AND UPON START UP OF CAR MOST DAYS, RUNS VERY ROUGH AND I HAVE TO WAIT A MINUTE BEFORE PUTTING INTO GEAR. THE OVERHEATING AND ROUGH ENGINE PROBLEMS KEEP REOCURRING NO MATTER WHAT WORK I HAVE DONE TO IT. MOST RECENT ISSUES WITH THE AC OFF AGAIN, AS OF TODAY, 12/8/2020.

WHILE ON AN INCLINE - THIS CONDITION MAY POSE A DANGER TO PEDESTRIANS AND OTHER MOTORISTS AS THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WILL ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO ROLL BACKWARDS A GREAT DISTANCE. THE DISTANCE AND SPEED OF TRAVEL BACKWARDS WILL VARY BASED ON ANGLE OF INCLINE OF STREET OR ROAD. WHEN THIS CONDITION OCCURS - THE DRIVER IS COMPLETELY UNAWARE AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO APPLY THE BRAKE IN ENOUGH TIME TO PREVENT COLLISION WITH OTHER VEHICLES OR PEDESTRIANS. THIS CONDITION HAPPENS WHEN: 1 - TRANSMISSION IS HOT (ABOUT 40 MIN DRIVE TIME) 2 - BRAKE IS DEPRESSED FOR LONGER THAN 3 SECONDS WHILE SITTING AT LIGHT. 3 - RELEASING BRAKE MAY OR MAY NOT RESULT IN THIS CONDITION HAPPENING. SERVICE 1 - THE VEHICLE SHOWS NO CODES FOR TRANSMISSION FAILURE. 2 - MULTIPLE GM DEALERS HAVE CONFIRMED SOFTWARE OF VEHICLE IS UP TO DATE. 3 - MULTIPLE DEALERS HAVE MIXED STATEMENTS IF THEY CAN DUPLICATE THE ISSUE OR NOT. DEALER 1 SAYS - "IT'S YOUR DRIVING HABITS. WE RESET THE COMPUTER AND IT WILL RE-LEARN HOW YOU DRIVE." VEHICLE MAY JERK VIOLENTLY DURING DE-ACCELERATION FROM EXPRESSWAY SPEEDS. THIS CONDITION MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL - ESPECIALLY DURING WINTER/ICE LIKE ROAD CONDITIONS. TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE: 1 - OPERATE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FOR AT LEAST 40 MINUTES AT EXPRESSWAY SPEEDS OF APPROX 70MPH 2 - WHEN EXITING EXPRESSWAY RAMP THE VEHICLE WILL DOWNSHIFT. 3 - SOMETIMES DURING DOWN SHIFTING - THERE IS A LURCH OR IMPACT LIKE FEELING SO INTENSE THAT THE DRIVER MAY BELIEVE THEY WERE REAR ENDED BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS MATTER WAS BROUGHT TO THE ATTEMPT OF GM DEALERS AND GM CORPORATE AND THEY HAVE FAILED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. DEALER 1 RESPONSE WAS SIMILAR TO "IT'S YOUR DRIVING HABITS" AND "WE RESET THE COMPUTER SO IT CAN RE-LEARN HOW YOU DRIVE". THIS FAILED TO RESOLVE ISSUE. DEALER 2 RESPONSE - WE CAN DUPLICATE THE ISSUE - THEN LATER WE CAN'T DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. DEALER ALSO ADVISED THEY EMAILED GM FOR ADDITIONAL SUPPORT. GM STATES THEY NEVER RECEIVED THE EMAIL. VEHICLE HAS SPENT GREATER THAN 30 DAYS IN THE SHOP FOR THE TRANSMISSION LIKE ISSUES. AS A FIREFIGHTER - IT IS MY PROFESSIONAL OPINION THAT THIS CONDITION MAY RESULT IN SUBSTANTIAL HARM TO THE DRIVER OR OCCUPANTS OF VEHICLE IF THIS CONDITION HAPPENS WHILE OPERATING THE MOTOR VEHICLE ON ICE OR SNOW AND POSSIBLY RAIN LIKE CONDITIONS. WHERE IT IS MY BELIEF THAT SUCH INJURY COULD RESULT IN DEATH OR GRAVE BODILY INJURY. THIS ISSUE HAS HAPPENED ON/OFF SINCE 01/01/2019 FROM 68K MILES TO CURRENT MILES OF 98K.
