Summary of Complaint

THE BRAKE LINE TO THE FRONT BRAKES BURST AND RESULTED IN NO BRAKES. IN 2013 THE BRAKE LINE TO THE REAR BURST AND HAD THE SAME RESULT. FORTUNATELY I DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT IN EITHER CASE. I REPAIRED THE REAR BRAKE LINE AND I EXPECTED YOUR ORGANIZATION TO ISSUE A RECALL BECAUSE MY RESEARCH INDICATED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO BE INJURED OR KILLED TO ISSUE A RECALL. THERE IS A REASONABLE EXPECTATION THAT A VEHICLE IN GOOD CONDITION THAT IS TEN YEARS OLD AND LESS THAN 100,000 MILES SHOULD NOT HAVE ITS BRAKES FAIL COMPLETELY AND UNEXPECTEDLY. WHY ARE THESE VEHICLES ALLOWED TO BE PRODUCED WITH BRAKE LINES MADE OF MATERIALS THAT WILL CERTAINLY FAIL IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. IN BOTH INSTANCES, I WAS TRAVELING AT A LOW SPEED. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A DRIVER, ESPECIALLY AN INEXPERIENCED DRIVER HAS THEIR BRAKES FAIL AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. YOU SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THE VEHICLES INVOLVED.

JUST SEARCHING THE VEHICLE WILL SHOW SEVERAL SITES REVEALING THE PROBLEM. THE NADA SITE GOES INTO MORE DETAIL ON THE PROBLEM. WE HAVE PARKED THE TRUCK UNTIL A DECISION IS MADE. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURE AND THEY STATED THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM, THE VEHICLE HAS TROUBLE WHEN STEERING AND LOOSES BRAKING.

Summary of Complaint

THE REAR FUEL TANK STRAP HOLDING THE FUEL TANK TO THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE HAS RUSTED/CORRODED AND FAILED. THE RESULT WAS THE TANK STRAP SEPARATING FROM THE PORTION NEAR WHERE THE STRAP BOLTS TO THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON PRIMARY CITY ROADS DURING THIS ISSUE. THE SEPARATED FUEL TANK STRAP THEN RUBBED AGAINST THE REAR PORTION OF THE DRIVE SHAFT NEAR THE REAR AXLE HOUSING. THIS CAUSED IT TO SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE AND ENTER THE ROADWAY. AFTER THE RETAINING STRAP FAILED, THE REAR PORTION OF THE FUEL TANK WAS THEN HANGING DANGEROUSLY LOW TOWARDS THE ROADWAY.

BRAKE LINE FAILURE IN SEVERAL PLACES. WAS UNDER VEHICLE PERFORMING AN OIL CHANGE. NOTICED FLUID ON THE BOTTOM OF THE FUEL TANK. INVESTIGATED AND FOUND THE REAR MOST HARD BRAKE LINE LEAKING. CONTINUED TO INSPECT ALL HARD LINES AND FOUND SEVERAL AREAS WHERE LEAKS WERE PRESENT. REMOVED VEHICLE FROM USE AND STARTED REPLACING ALL HARD BRAKE LINES. NEW LINES ARE STAINLESS STEEL THUS I SHOULD NEVER RUN INTO THIS ISSUE AGAIN. GM SHOULD HAVE USED STAINLESS STEEL LINES IN THE FIRST PLACE RATHER THAN PLAIN STEEL LINES. THE ORIGINAL BRAKES LINES BROKE LIKE TWIGS WHEN I BENT THEM TO THROW THEM AWAY. I HAVE NEVER SEEN BRAKE LINES IN THIS TYPE OF CONDITION ON A VEHICLE WITH 130,000 MILES. 2003 SILVERADO DRIVERS SEAT HEATER TURNS ON BY ITSELF AFTER START UP AND BECOMES A DANGEROUS DISTRACTION TO KEEP TURNING IT OFF WHILE DRIVING. IT CERTAINLY SEEMS THAT THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL, WITH A REQUIREMENT FOR GM TO CORRECT THE DEFECT AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNERS OF THE VEHICLES. THE BRAKE LINES ON MY 2003 SILVERADO 1500 ARE RUSTING COMPLETELY OUT. TWO YEARS AGO I HAD TO REPLACE A PORTION OF THE PASSENGERS FRONT BRAKE LINE BECAUSE OF CORROSION. LAST YEAR I HAD TO REPLACE THE LINE THAT GOES FROM THE ABS TO THE REAR FLEXIBLE HOSE FITTING. TODAY I DISCOVERED THAT A LINE FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER IS LEAKING, I HAVEN'T GOTTEN UNDERNEATH TO SEE IF IT IS THE FRONT OR REAR SUPPLY LINE. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAD A 1968 CAMARO FOR 19 YEARS, SOLD IT IN 2004 AND IT'S BRAKE LINES WERE IN PERFECT CONDITION NEVER A PROBLEM. THAT'S 36 YEAR OLD AND NEVER A PROBLEM. I ALSO HAVE A 2006 COLBALT SS, IT'S LINES ARE OKAY BECAUSE THEY HAVE A COATING ON THEM THAT PROTECTS THE METAL. WHY DOESN'T THE TRUCK HAVE THE SAME COATING? IS SOMEONE GOING TO HAVE TO DIE OR BE SERIOUSLY INJURED BEFORE A RECALL IS ISSUED. BY THE WAY ALL THE FAILURES HAPPEN WHEN I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, APPLYING THE BRAKES, NOT WHEN I WAS STANDING STILL.

AT LEAST ONE OF THESE LINES FAILED WHILE DOING THE BRAKE CHECK DUMPING THE WHOLE SYSTEM ON THE FLOOR. THANK GOD IT WAS IN THE INSPECTION LANE AND NOT WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WITH MY GRANDSON IN THE VEHICLE OR MY PREGNANT DAUGHTER IN LAW! THE VEHICLE INSPECTOR SAID THIS IS NOT THE FIRST CHEVY TRUCK THAT HAS HAPPENED IN HIS LANE AND I SHOULD CHECK FOR ANY RECALLS. THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR AS ALL THE LINES FRONT TO BACK WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AND SYSTEM FLUSHED AND FILLED.
