TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 DODGE DURANGO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT MERGED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE THIRTY MINUTES LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE IGNITION COIL. AFTER THE REPAIR THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. Summary of Complaint

CAR AUTO-STOPPED WHILE CONDUCTING DRIVING LESSON FOR MY 15-YEAR-OLD STEPDAUGHTER. WE WERE TRAVELING 40MPH ON A COUNTRY ROAD AT THE TIME. SHE DRIFTED OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SAID THE STEERING WHEEL WAS STUCK. I TOLD HER TO APPLY THE BRAKES. SHE SAID SHE WAS AND THEY WEREN'T WORKING EITHER. WE WENT THROUGH A STOP SIGN AND WERE VERY NEARLY T-BONED BY CARS FROM BOTH DIRECTIONS. MY STEPDAUGHTER SENSIBLY DID AS I INSTRUCTED AND PUSHED AS HARD AS POSSIBLE ON THE BRAKE, MANAGED TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE PLUNGING INTO THE RIVER IN FRONT OF US. I HAD BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR FOR SIX MONTHS PREVIOUS TO THIS INCIDENT. TWO DIAGNOSTICS REPORTED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS AUTO-STOPPING BUT NOT WHY THIS WAS OCCURRING. A LOCAL MECHANIC SUGGESTED IT WAS PROBABLY THE GAS GAUGE SENSOR IN THE FUEL PUMP WHICH MADE SENSE TO ME BECAUSE EVERYTHING BUT THE GAS GAUGE WORKED WHENEVER THE CAR AUTO-STOPPED. IT WOULD TYPICALLY RESTART WITHIN 15 MINUTES OR SO. I ASSUMED WE HAD SOLVED THE PROBLEM WHEN THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP. I KNOW NOW THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT THE PROBLEM ALTHOUGH I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CAR. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE GOING THROUGH THE SAME DIFFICULTIES WITH 1999 DODGE DURANGOS. MY WIFE, STEPDAUGHTER AND I WERE VERY LUCKY NOT TO HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED DURING THE DRIVING LESSON. DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND SUDDENLY THERE WAS ZERO OIL PRESSURE. I PULLED TO THE SHOULDER OF A DANGEROUS HIGHWAY HOPING THE PROBLEM MIGHT REMEDY AFTER SOME COOLING DOWN. THEY HAD REPLACED MY OIL PUMP WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER THEIR WARRANTY BUT HADN'T TOLD ME THAT THESE ENGINES HAVE OIL SLUDGE BUILDUP PROBLEMS THAT CAUSE THE OIL PUMPS TO FAIL. I NOTICED A LOUD CLUNKING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF MY 1999 DODGE DURANGO. UPON HAVING IT INSPECTED, I WAS ADVISED THAT THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS ON BOTH SIDES WERE NO GOOD, DUE TO A LACK OF LUBRICATION CAUSED BY FAULTY SEALS. THE MECHANIC ADVISED ME THAT WHILE OTHER YEARS OF THE DURANGO HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, MINE DID NOT HAVE A RECALL. HOWEVER, I WAS ADVISED THAT THE DAMAGED BALL JOINTS ARE SUBJECT TO FAILURE, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE ENTIRE FRONT WHEEL ASSEMBLY TO COME OFF THE CAR. IN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM, I FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM IS JUST AS COMMON IN THE 1999 MODEL YEARS AS OTHER (RECALLED) YEARS. APPARENTLY, THERE HAVE NOT YET BEEN ENOUGH INJURIES OR DEATHS YET FROM 1999 YEAR VEHICLES. SURE HOPE I'M NOT ONE OF THE STATS THAT FINALLY FORCES A RECALL. *JB

GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND OCCASIONALLY AT 50 MPH THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WOULD TURN OFF NO POWER ANYWHERE. REPAIR SHOP COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM, FINALLY AFTER 2 WEEKS AT THE SHOP THEY SAID IT NEEDED A NEW POWER TRAIN CONTROL MODULE. THE COMPUTER NUMBER THEY GAVE ME IS A RE-MANUFACTURED NUMBER. SO THE POWER TRAIN HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED WITH 24,000 MILES IN 2001. NOW THE COST JUST FOR THE PART IS $535.60. THAT MAKES 2 POWER TRAIN CONTROL MODULES FOR 1 VEHICLE. *JB

MY 99 DODGE DURANGO 4X4 HAS HAD VIBRATIONS AND NOISE IN THE FRONT FROM WHEN I PURCHASED. THE DODGE DEALER EARLIER TOLD ME THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR HIDDEN WARRANTIES ON THIS PRODUCT, VIN# [XXX]. MY GOODYEAR DEALER, INSPECTED MY DODGE AND SHOWED ME THAT MY UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE BAD (( MOVING OVER 1/2 IN)) HE SAID TAKE IT TO YOUR DEALER, BECAUSE THIS IS NOT RIGHT. DODGE DEALER ALSO SAID THAT BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT, UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE BAD AND ALSO THAT THE HUBS AND WHEEL BEARINGS. WERE BAD, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FOR MY SAFETY. I CALLED DIAMLER CHRYSLER CORP. AND ASKED IF THEY WOULD COVER THIS MFG PROBLEM. I WAS GIVEN CLAM #13756706. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PERSON SAID THEY WOULD NOT COVER THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE MY VIN # NOT COVERED BY THE UPPER & LOWER BALL JOINT RECALL. I COULD NOT BELIEVE THIS WOULD NOT BE COVERED, BECAUSE WHEN I LOOKED UP MY 99 DURANGO ON YOUR SITE ON COMPLAINTS, I SAW OVER 500 SIMILAR CASES FOR 99 DURANGO, WITH BALL JOINT AND STEERING PROBLEMS. DODGE SAID 99 NOT PART OF RECALL. I THINK THE U.S GOV. NEEDS TO TELL DODGE TO INCLUDE IN RECALL ALL THE DODGE DURANGO WITH THIS PROBLEM, PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR THE SAFETY OF THE AMER. PEOPLE AND NOT ALOW CHRYSLER CORP GET AWAY WITH THIS SAFETY PROBLEM. I FEEL THE AMER PEOPLE SHOULD NOT NEED TO GET THE COURTS INVOLVED WHEN WE HAVE AN AGENCY THAT SHOULD PROTECT THE AMER. 1999 DODGE DURANGO EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH CONTROL ARMS AND BALL JOINT FAILURES.*MR THE CONSUMER HAD ALL THE BALL JOINTS REPLACED IN LATE 2003 AFTER HEARING INCIDENTS FROM THE MEDIA. IN LATE 2004, THE CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN A MINOR LOW SPEED ACCIDENT AND THE LEFT CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE LEFT BALL JOINT WERE REPLACED. (THE CONSUMER DID NOT STATE IF THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE). AFTER THE REPAIR THE CONSUMES WIFE STARTED TO HEAR A POPPING SOUND, THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER BUT NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND BUT THEY DID CHECK ALL THE BOLTS AND TIGHTENED TO SPECS. IMMEDIATELY AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. THE CONSUMER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE HIMSELF BY REMOVING THE LEFT FRONT TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY AND FOUND THE COTTER PIN INSTALLATION POORLY DONE ON THE UPPER BALL JOINT. THE CONSUMER THEN FOUND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY WHICH HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN REPAIRED TO BE POORLY DONE AS WELL. THE BRAKES SQUEAKED, BUT THE CONSUMER DECLINED THE REPAIRS. *JB
