CAR AUTO-STOPPED WHILE CONDUCTING DRIVING LESSON FOR MY 15-YEAR-OLD STEPDAUGHTER. WE WERE TRAVELING 40MPH ON A COUNTRY ROAD AT THE TIME. SHE DRIFTED OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SAID THE STEERING WHEEL WAS STUCK. I TOLD HER TO APPLY THE BRAKES. SHE SAID SHE WAS AND THEY WEREN'T WORKING EITHER. WE WENT THROUGH A STOP SIGN AND WERE VERY NEARLY T-BONED BY CARS FROM BOTH DIRECTIONS. MY STEPDAUGHTER SENSIBLY DID AS I INSTRUCTED AND PUSHED AS HARD AS POSSIBLE ON THE BRAKE, MANAGED TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE PLUNGING INTO THE RIVER IN FRONT OF US. I HAD BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR FOR SIX MONTHS PREVIOUS TO THIS INCIDENT. TWO DIAGNOSTICS REPORTED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS AUTO-STOPPING BUT NOT WHY THIS WAS OCCURRING. A LOCAL MECHANIC SUGGESTED IT WAS PROBABLY THE GAS GAUGE SENSOR IN THE FUEL PUMP WHICH MADE SENSE TO ME BECAUSE EVERYTHING BUT THE GAS GAUGE WORKED WHENEVER THE CAR AUTO-STOPPED. IT WOULD TYPICALLY RESTART WITHIN 15 MINUTES OR SO. I ASSUMED WE HAD SOLVED THE PROBLEM WHEN THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP. I KNOW NOW THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT THE PROBLEM ALTHOUGH I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CAR. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE GOING THROUGH THE SAME DIFFICULTIES WITH 1999 DODGE DURANGOS. MY WIFE, STEPDAUGHTER AND I WERE VERY LUCKY NOT TO HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED DURING THE DRIVING LESSON. I NOTICED A LOUD CLUNKING SOUND COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF MY 1999 DODGE DURANGO. UPON HAVING IT INSPECTED, I WAS ADVISED THAT THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS ON BOTH SIDES WERE NO GOOD, DUE TO A LACK OF LUBRICATION CAUSED BY FAULTY SEALS. THE MECHANIC ADVISED ME THAT WHILE OTHER YEARS OF THE DURANGO HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, MINE DID NOT HAVE A RECALL. HOWEVER, I WAS ADVISED THAT THE DAMAGED BALL JOINTS ARE SUBJECT TO FAILURE, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE ENTIRE FRONT WHEEL ASSEMBLY TO COME OFF THE CAR. IN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM, I FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM IS JUST AS COMMON IN THE 1999 MODEL YEARS AS OTHER (RECALLED) YEARS. DODGE DEALER ALSO SAID THAT BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT, UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS WERE BAD AND ALSO THAT THE HUBS AND WHEEL BEARINGS. WERE BAD, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED FOR MY SAFETY. IN LATE 2004, THE CONSUMER WAS INVOLVED IN A MINOR LOW SPEED ACCIDENT AND THE LEFT CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY INCLUDING THE LEFT BALL JOINT WERE REPLACED. (THE CONSUMER DID NOT STATE IF THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE). AFTER THE REPAIR THE CONSUMES WIFE STARTED TO HEAR A POPPING SOUND, THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER BUT NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND BUT THEY DID CHECK ALL THE BOLTS AND TIGHTENED TO SPECS. IMMEDIATELY AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. THE CONSUMER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE HIMSELF BY REMOVING THE LEFT FRONT TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY AND FOUND THE COTTER PIN INSTALLATION POORLY DONE ON THE UPPER BALL JOINT.
