WHEN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE GOES BEYOND 80 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, WHILE IN MOTION, THE COMPUTER HAS SHUT OFF THE ENGINE MULTIPLE TIMES AND A CODE SAYING NO BUS IS DISPLAYED IN THE DASH FOR A FEW SECONDS. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME GOING 70 MPH. IT HAS HAPPENED GOING 45 MPH AND AS LOW AS 20 MPH. ALL I HAVE TO DO IS PULL OVER AND LET THE COMPUTER COOL OFF AND IT TURNS ON AGAIN. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AS POWER STEERING SHUTS OFF AND BRAKES BECOME VERY HARD. I HAVE A GREAT CAR IN THE WINTER. IN THE SUMMER IT'S A DEATH TRAP THAT CAN SHUT OFF ENGINE, POWER STEERING AND BRAKES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY. CHECK YOUTUBE AND GOOGLE FOR "DODGE DURANGO NO BUS" AND YOU WILL FIND THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH THE COMPUTER.

1999 DODGE DURANGO (5.2L V8) CAR HAS STALLED NUMEROUS TIMES IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND LIGHT TRAFFIC AT SPEEDS UP TO 75 MPH AS WELL AS AT A STOP LIGHT. STALLS ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND VERY DANGEROUS. MY WIFE CANNOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE WHEN IT STALLS DUE TO THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BOOSTED BRAKES. IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND STOP WHEN THIS OCCURS. THE FAULT IS DUE TO A DEFECTIVE PCM (ENGINE COMPUTER) WHICH OVERHEATS IN HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES (>75 DEGREES). REPAIR SHOP COULD NOT INITIALLY DETERMINE NATURE OF FAILURES AND QUOTED A VERY HIGH PRICED REPAIR THAT WOULD 'PROBABLY' FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE DETERMINED THAT POURING ICE WATER ON THE COMPUTER COOLS IT SUFFICIENTLY AND ALLOWS THE VEHICLE TO START UP AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES. REPLACING PCM COSTS $300 FOR DIY OR >$600 FROM A REPAIR SHOP. MANUFACTURER HAS MADE NO ATTEMPT TO REPLACE OR RECALL THIS ITEM.

IN JANUARY OF 05 HAD TO HAVE BOTH UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS REPLACED, CONTROL ARM, FRONT BRAKES AND NEW TIRES AS A RESULT OF BAD F/E SUSPENSION. NOW TODAY THE SPEED SENSOR (AND I AM HOPING THAT'S IT) HAS GONE OUT ON THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE HAD TWO WINDOW MOTOR FAILURES, A SUDDEN DROP IN OIL PRESSURE CAUSING THE TRUCK TO STALL AND THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY COMPLAINTS IN REGARDS TO THESE FAILURES AND THE DODGE DURANGO AND ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE RECALLED OTHER DODGE TRUCKS FOR THESE ISSUES - THEY HAVE YET TO HAVE RECALLED THE 1999. I HAVE CONTACTED DODGE SINCE JANUARY OF THIS YEAR REGARDING THIS ISSUE AND THEY RESPONDED TELLING ME THAT THEY HADN'T HAD ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO ISSUE A RECALL. I FIND THIS HARD TO BELIEVE SEEING ALL THE COMPLAINTS MADE TO NHTSA AND TO CONSUMER AFFAIRS IN REGARDS TO THIS YEAR AND MODEL. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE DODGE DEALER I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK FROM (USED) SOLD IT TO ME KNOWING OF THESE PROBLEMS - ALTHOUGH THIS I DOUBT I COULD EVER PROVE. I AM THANKFUL THAT THE FRONT WHEELS STAYED ON AS LONG AS THEY DID AS I HAVE READ OF THE BALL JOINT ISSUE CAUSING WHEEL SEPARATION. THE DODGE DURANGO WE BOUGHT NEW HAD TO HAVE NEW UPPER BALL JOINTS REPLACED ALONG WITH NEW TIE RODS IN ORDER TO HAVE THE FRONT END ALIGNED PROPERLY. IT HAD BEEN WEARING THE TIRES OUT ON THE OUTER EDGE TOO FAST SINCE NEW. THESE PARTS SHOULD NOT HAVE WORN OUT THAT FAST; INSTEAD THEY WERE DEFECTIVE FROM THE BEGINNING. I BELIEVE THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT IN ALL THE DODGE DURNAGO. IF YOU DO A RECALL YOU SHOULD NOT START WITH JUST THE 2000 YEAR MODELS; YOU SHOULD START WITH THE1998, THE FIRST YEAR, AND DO EVERY YEAR UP UNTIL THE NEW 2005 MODELS. THE EARLIER DURANGOS ARE JUST AS BAD AS THE LATER ONES ON THIS ITEM. I HOPE YOU TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN YOU ISSUE YOUR RECALL NOTICE IN THE FUTURE.
