Summary of Complaint

IN MAY 2005 THE ACCELERATOR CABLE STUCK WIDE OPEN ON MY 2001 FORD ESCAPE (V-6 ENGINE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) THIS HAPPENED IN MY DRIVEWAY WHEN I PUNCHED DOWN ON THE PEDAL VERY HARD. THERE IS A PLASTIC COVER ON TOP OF THE ENGINE THAT MUST BE REMOVED IN ORDER TO SEE WHERE THE CABLES HOOK UP TO THE THROTTLE BODY. I REMOVED THIS TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY OR THE CABLE THAT WAS STUCK. AS I WAS TAKING IT OFF THE CABLE BECAME UNSTUCK ON IT'S OWN SO I WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. AT THAT POINT I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY DID NOTHING. ON 8/10/05 MY WIFE PUSHED DOWN HARD ON THE GAS PEDAL WHILE MERGING INTO FREEWAY TRAFFIC. THE ACCELERATOR STUCK WIDE OPEN AGAIN AND SHE FOUND HERSELF GOING ABOUT 100 MPH DOWN THE HIGHWAY. FINALLY SHE PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, COASTED TO THE BERM AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK. SINCE THE DEALER COULDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM THE FIRST TIME I DECIDED TO LOOK AT IT AGAIN MYSELF. AGAIN I TOOK THE PLASTIC COVER OFF THE TOP OF THE ENGINE AND ONCE AGAIN THE CABLE BECAME UNSTUCK. THIS MADE ME SUSPECT THAT THE PLASTIC COVER MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE PROBLEM. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION I FOUND THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE HOUSING HAD BROKEN RIGHT BEFORE THE PART THAT CONNECTS TO THE THROTTLE BODY. THIS CREATES A SITUATION THAT CAN CAUSE THE CRUISE CABLE TO PIVOT UP AND WEDGE AGAINST THE PLASTIC ENGINE COVER DURING HARD ACCELERATION INSTEAD OF IT MOVING IN ITS HOUSING LIKE IT SHOULD THUS CAUSING THE THROTTLE TO STICK WIDE OPEN. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN A FEW TIMES SO I AM CONFIDENT THIS WAS ACTUALLY THE PROBLEM. I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM TO THE DEALER BUT THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO WORK ON THE CAR FOR OVER A WEEK SO I WENT TO THE PARTS DEPT. ORDERED THE PART (UNDER $30) WENT HOME AND PUT IT ON MYSELF (TAKES LESS THAN 5 MINUTES). THE CAR IS FIXED NOW. *NM

THE ENGINE DIED TWICE WHILE BEING DRIVEN RESULTING IN LOSS OF POWER TO THE STEERING AND BRAKES. IN BOTH CASES, THE VEHICLE WAS GOING DOWN A SLIGHT GRADE AT 30-35 MPH, MY FOOT WAS OFF THE ACCELERATOR. THERE WAS NO ADVANCED INDICATION THAT THERE WAS AN IGNITION PROBLEM. FOLLOWING THE FIRST INCIDENT (5,400 MILES) THE DEALER CHECKED IT OUR AND SAID THERE WERE NO CODES INDICATING ANY FAULTS. THE SECOND TIME (12,350 MILES) THE SAME DEALER CALLED THE FORD HOTLINE AND WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE IAC VALVE AND PCV HOSE. THUS FAR, THE VEHICLE HAS NOT FAILED BUT I DO NOT HAVE COMPLETE CONFIDENCE IN THE REPAIRS. IN BOTH CASES, I CALLED THE FORD CUSTOMER HOTLINE AND LODGED A COMPLAINT. WHILE THE ESCAPE IS DRIVING AT NO PARTICULAR SPEED, THE STEERING WHEEL TUGS A LITTLE THEN IT LOCKS COMPLETELY UP, THEN THE BRAKES FAIL, THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE CAR TO STOP IS TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. MY ESCAPE HAS DONE THIS THREE TIMES SINCE I BOUGHT IT IN MAY OF THIS YEAR. TWO OF THE INCIDENTS ALMOST RESULTED IN CAR ACCIDENTS BECAUSE THE CAR CAN NOT BE STEERED. THE CAR TOTALLY FREEZES UP WITH ALL ENGINES LIGHTS COMING ON. THE SPEED DOESN'T SEEM TO BE A FACTOR. ALL THREE OCCASSIONS MY CD PLAYER HAS BEEN ON, THE AIR HAS BEEN ON LOW AND MY LIGHTS HAVE BEEN ON. AFTER THE CAR FINALLY STOPS BY USING THE EMERGENGY BRAKE, I SHUT EVERYTHING OFF AND IT STARTS RIGHT BACK UP AGAIN.

LEFT REAR PASSENGER RESTRAINT WAS JAMMED AFTER THE FIRST USE. THIS PART WAS REPLACED AND IT WAS JAMMED AFTER THE FIRST USE. IT WAS REPLACED A SECOND TIME AND IS CURRENTLY FUCTIONAL BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN 4 MONTHS SINCE PURCHASE DATE THAT IT HAS BEEN FUNCTIONAL. REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAD A BROKEN SEAL AND WAS LEAKING. THIS PART WAS REPLACED AND IS NOW FUNCTIONAL. THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS CRACKED AND REPLACED. THIS PART IS NOW FUNCTIONAL. THE POWER STEERING WAS EFFECTED WHEN PART OF THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM FELL OUT OF THE CAR WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PUT IN PARK. THE PARTS (INCLUDING ALTERNATOR, BELTS AND SPRING) LITERALLY FELL OFF THE CAR. THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN MANY FATALITIES AS THE VEHICLE WAS ON THE HIGHWAY ONLY MINUTES PRIOR WITH A CAR FULL OF PASSANGERS. THE RESULTS OF THIS INCIDENT WOULD HAVE BEEN DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT IF THIS HAD HAPPENED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. FORD HAS NOT BEEN RESPONSIVE TO MY NEEDS AS A CONSUMER AND HAS MINIMIZED THE SAFETY HAZARD POSED BY THIS DEFECTIVE VEHICLE.

The contact owns a 2001 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, the vehicle loss motive power. The contact pulls the vehicle over to the side of the road. WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO OUR MECHANIC FOR OTHER WORK TO BE DONE. HE NOTED THAT THE SUSPENSION PART (WHICH HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY REMEDIATED WITH THE APPLICATION OF A BRACKET WITH A RECALL) IS EXCESSIVELY RUSTED. WHILE I SURELY UNDERSTAND THAT RUST IS A FACTOR OF TIME AND MILES, WE HAVE AROUND ONLY 90,000 MILES ON THIS VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THAT THE BRACKET WAS THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR FMC TO APPLY. AS A RESULT, I FEAR THAT THERE ARE MANY MORE DRIVERS OF THIS VEHICLE WHO MAY ERRONEOUSLY BELIEVE THAT THE ISSUE WITH THE SUSPENSION HAD BEEN ADDRESSED BY THE RECALL AND MAY BE UNDER THE ILLUSION THAT THEY ARE DRIVING A SAFE VEHICLE.
