Summary of Complaint

WHILE DRIVING MY 2010 FORD ESCAPE XLS 4 CYLINDER , THE TRUCK STALLED AND CUT OFF DURING DRIVING. LUCKY I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I STARTED THE TRUCK BACK AFTER 30 MINUTES, THE TRUCK DROVE AND AGAIN WITH NO WARNING THE TRUCK STARTED TO STALL AND CUT OFF. THE JUST STARTED TO HAPPEN OUT OF NO WHERE. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED AND STILL PAYING ON IT. THE WARRANTY THAT I PURCHASED RAN OUT AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR. THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION; THIS HAPPEN RIGHT DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND BY THE GRACE OF GOD I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE. I DID MANAGE TO GET THE TRUCK HOME BUT AFTER READING MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE, I FEEL LIKE THIS SHOULD OF BEEN LOOKED INTO BY FORD FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL. FROM WHAT I AM GETTING THIS IS FROM A KNOWN ISSUE WITH EARLY MODEL FORD ESCAPES "ELECTRIC THROTTLE BODY". I WAS ON A STREET WHEN THIS OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT AT 34 TO 40 MILES PER HOUR.

ON JULY 20, 2013 I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY WITH MY PARENTS (63 & 67 RESPECTIVELY) WHEN SUDDENLY (OUT OF THE BLUE) I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL BUT VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE WRENCH LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE VEHICLE WAS JERKING. I HAD A CAR BEHIND ME THAT ALMOST CRASH ON ME. I MANAGED TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER. I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND TURNED IT ON WITHIN 2-3 MINUTES AND IT WORKED PERFECTLY (AS IF NOTHING HAS HAPPENED). I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT (10:30PM MORE OR LESS). I WENT TO A LOCAL PEP BOYS STORE NEXT DAY SINCE THE DEALERS WERE CLOSED (SUNDAY). THEY CHECKED IT AND SAID EVERYTHING WAS OK. ON MONDAY, JULY 21, SAME ISSUE HAPPENED TWICE WITHIN 30 MINUTE RANGE. SOMEONE COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED WHEN MY TRUCK STALLED. I HAD MY 83 AND 81 YEAR OLD PARENTS WITH ME. Electronic steering assist is intermittently failing causing loss of power steering. Other vehicles of this model and year have been recalled for this failure. My Vin is not included in this recall. Summary of Complaint

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 30 mph while attempting to make a left turn, the steering wheel turned right inadvertently then ceased. The contact slammed on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle from going into a ditch. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and diagnosed that the steering shaft torque sensor malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer since parts were on back order. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 118,000.

MY SERVICE DOG HAS GOTTEN STUCK IN THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE LIFT GATE MOTOR BECOMING BROKEN. I WAS UNABLE TO OPEN THE LIFTGATE AND HAD TO TAKE DOWN THE SEATS. IN THE EVENT THIS WAS AN EMERGENCY MY SERVICE ANIMAL WOULD'VE DIED. MY SERVICE ANIMAL IS TOO LARGE TO RIDE UP FRONT AND SHE RIDES IN THE BACK. ON OCCASION WHEN MY LIFT GATE WAS NOT WORKING, I HAD TO RENT A VEHICLE. IN ORDER TO FIX THE RECENT ISSUE WITH THE GATE, THE SHOP THAT I TOOK MY CAR TO HAD TO PRY OPEN THE GATE AND REPLACE THE MOTOR ASSEMBLY. THIS ISSUE WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE LIFT GATE IS REPLACED AND NO LONGER HOLDS WATER. THIS IS A COMMON SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE FORD ESCAPES. ADDITIONALLY, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE DOOR ALSO HOLDS A LOT OF WATER. THE MILEAGE INDICATED IS FOR THE MOST RECENT REPAIR, BUT IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES PRIOR TO THIS DATE.

FIRST I NOTICE THE CAR JUST DROP GEARS AND NEARLY STOP ON THE OFF RAMP OF THE HIGHWAY. SECOND TIME I TRIED TO REVERSE AND IT WOULD NOT MOVE AND I HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK TO TAKE IT TO THE GARAGE. FORD TOLD ME IT NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. FORD DEALERSHIP WANTED TO CHARGE ME OVER $ 5000 FOR THE JOB. I WINDED UP GOING TO A LEE MYLES THAT CHARGE COST TO $ 4000 FOR THE REPAIRS IT HAD DONE. I HAVE HAD TO REMOVE THE COVERING FROM MY STEERING WHEEL AND MANUALLY USE THE SPARE KEY AS AN EXTENSION OF THE O E INSIDE THE IGNITION, IN ORDER FOR THE VEHICLE TO CRANK. THE SAME PROCESS IS REQUIRED IN TURNING THE CAR OFF. RIGHT NOW IT WORKS, HOWEVER COULD BE A HAZARD WITH ALL OF THE WIRING IN THE STEERING WHEEL EXPOSED. AND WHO IS TO SAY THAT ONE DAY THE VEHICLE WON'T JUST SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WITH THE KEY AND IGNITION SWITCH HAVING AN IMAGINARY PHYSICAL CONNECTION?

I HAD NOT CHANGED LANES IN MORE THAN A MILE, ALTHOUGH THE ROAD DOES TWIST SLIGHTLY IN THAT LOCATION. I HAD ON AUTOMATIC LIGHTS, DEFROST AND REAR DEFROST, BLUETOOTH AUDIO, AND CRUISE CONTROL. MY TANK WAS JUST BELOW 1/2 FULL OF GAS AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BUT IS NOT STORED IN A GARAGE OVERNIGHT. I COASTED TO AN EMERGENCY LANE ON THE PASSING LANE, TURNED THE KEY OFF (OTHER THAN THE TIME, AUDIO, AND BRAKES, NOTHING ELSE WOULD RESPOND.) NOW IT'S THE STEERING WHEEL IT WON'T TURN PROPERLY IT'S SO HARD TO TURN LIKE IT'S LOCK CAUSE IT MAKE A CLICKING SOUND BEFORE IT COMPLETELY LOCK. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND THEY SENT ME A TEXT TOLD ME TO DO WHATEVER I WANT. THIS VECHICAL IS A HAZARD TO DRIVE. IF IT HAD HAPPENED SECONDS EARLIER I COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR MY PET COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED, OR BOTH. I NOTE THAT I HAD PUSHED THE REAR DEFROST BUTTON WHILE DRIVING TO CLEAR UP SOME FOGGING BECAUSE THE WEATHER WAS DAMP AND THE BIG DOG WAS BACK THERE, BUT THAT WAS NORMAL USE.

WHILE MAKING A TURN, THE ELECTRICAL STEERING ASSIST DISENGAGED FOR A FEW SECONDS AND A BEEPING ALARM SOUNDED THREE TIMES. THIS HAPPENED TO ME ON ANOTHER OCCASION. AFTER THE SECOND TIME I GOT THE CAR BACK HOME AND PARKED IT UNTIL I COULD DETERMINE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. FOUND THE SAME HAPPENINGS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM AND MY ESCAPE WAS ONE OF THE RECALL VINS. IN 2014, I TOOK IT TO FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY DID WHATEVER WAS REQUIRED AT THAT TIME. I NEVER HAD AN ISSUE BEFORE THE RECALL, AND THEY APPARENTLY DID THE REPLACEMENT TO KEEP THE ELECTRICAL ASSIST FROM DISENGAGING. FROM MY UNDERSTANDING, THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY 10 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES. MY ESCAPE IS AT 191,000 MILES CURRENTLY. FORD SERVICE SAYS THEY CANNOT FIX IT WITHOUT ME COVERING THE COST, AND IF ANOTHER RECALL IS ISSUED, FORD MAY REIMBURSE ME. I BELIEVE ANOTHER RECALL SHOULD BE REQUIRED AS VEHICLES TODAY ARE DRIVEN MORE MILES THAT 150K. IT IS DANGEROUS WHEN THE STEERING ASSIST DISENGAGES AS NO POWER STEERING IS AVAILABLE. THE STEERING WHEEL IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN WHEN THE ASSIST GOES OUT. FORTUNATELY, I DID NOT HIT ANYTHING AS THE STEERING ASSIST REENGAGED WHILE STILL IN MY TURN. IF IT HAD NOT REENGAGED AT THAT EXACT TIME, NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT I WOULD HAVE HIT THE VEHICLE IN THE OTHER LANE. I WAS ON A HIGHWAY AT THE TIME IT FIRST HAPPENED AND THE SECOND TIME IT OCCURRED I WAS TURNING INTO SOMEONE'S DRIVEWAY.

I SPOKE WITH BRIAN AND UPON HIS EXAMINATION OF THE VIN# THERE WAS NO RECALL ON MY CAR AND THAT IF I WANTED THE CAR CHECKED OUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $235.00 TO HAVE THEM CHECK IT.I THEN WENT AND CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPANY CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER 866-436-7332 AND SPOKE WITH DANA WHO STATED THAT ON AUGUST 4, 2014 THE CAR WAS BROUGHT IN AND THEY REPROGRAMMED THE POWER-STEERING SENSOR/MODULE IT WAS RESET NOT REPLACED. I TOLD DANA THAT THIS IS A RECALL AND THE UNIT WAS TO BE REPLACED NOT RESET & DANA SAID THAT THEY HAVE THE BEST HIGH TECH PROGRAMMING SYSTEMS. IT WAS RESET NOT REPLACED, DANA SAID YES & THAT THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO FOR ME. I THEN CALLED 888-327-4236 AND SPOKE WITH LAVENIA DID MY REPORT. FORD IS UNWILLING TO REPLACE THE RECALL UNIT 14S05/NHTSA RECALL 14V-284.
