TODAY I EXPERIENCED A FRIGHTENING DEGREE OF BRAKE FAILURE. I WAS ON A FREEWAY OFF RAMP WHICH WAS ON A DOWNGRADE. AS I WAS GOING OVER SOME MINOR BUMPS IN THE ROAD, I APPLIED MY BRAKES AND LOST ABOUT 80% OF THE BRAKES. I HEARD A STRANGE NOISE AND THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. I HAD TO PUSH MY FOOT WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR TO STOP THE CAR & IT DID STOP. THIS FAILURE CONTINUED FOR ABOUT 5-7MINUTES WHILE DRIVING IN STOP & GO CITY STREET TRAFFIC. I WAS READY TO PULL OVER AT A SAFE SPOT WHEN I NOTICED THE BRAKES RETURNED TO FULL POWER AND CONTINUED TO WORK PROPERLY FOR THE LAST 10 MINUTES OF MY DRIVE. NOW I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR, ESPECIALLY WITH CHILDREN OR PASSENGERS. I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE EARLIER THIS YEAR REGARDING THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM ON MY CAR. IT WAS DATED JANUARY 2020: 19S54 / NHTSA RECALL 19V-904. I'VE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND SEE THAT IT HAS CAUSED ACCIDENTS ALREADY. WHEN I CALLED FORD ABOUT THIS NOTICE, I WAS TOLD IT WAS ONLY AN 'ALERT' AND THEY'D LET ME KNOW WHEN PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. THAT WAS 9 MONTHS AGO. THE NOTICE SAID PARTS WERE ANTICIPATED TO BE AVAILABLE THE LATE FIRST QUARTER OF 2020. NOW THAT I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS DEADLY HAZARD, THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE WHEN THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH EXISTS DUE TO BRAKE FAILURE! I WANT TO GET MY CAR REPAIRED NOW. WENT TO 3 FORD DEALERS AND NONE WILL HELP BECAUSE THE RECALL HAS NO "SOLUTION YET". ONE TECH TOLD ME TO DEAL WITH A BAD BRAKE PEDAL AND DON'T DRIVE FAST. THAT'S NOT SAFE FOR MY WIFE OR CHILD IN THE VEHICLE. FORD SAYS PARTS MAY BE AVAILABLE IN THE LAST PART OF THE 2020 FIRST QUARTER. WHILE APPROACHING A FOUR WAY INTERSECTION STOP LIGHT AT APPROXIMATELY 20-25 M.P.H. IN A 45 M.P.H ZONE ON A HIGHWAY HEADED INTO THE CITY THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AND WHILE DOING SO ALSO HIT A POTHOLE SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE BRAKES FAILED TO ENGAGE IN ANY CAPACITY. RELEASED PRESSURE FROM BRAKE PEDAL AND THEN REAPPLIED BRAKES AT WHICH POINT THE BRAKES ENGAGED AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE BUT NOT BEFORE OVERSHOOTING INITIAL PLANNED STOP POINT BY 6-8 FEET INTO THE INTERSECTION. WITH PASSENGER AS WITNESS.PEDAL NOW FEELS FINE AND BRAKES WORK NORMAL. A SIMILAR SITUATION OCCURRED 3-4 MONTHS PRIOR AND AFTERWARDS THE PEDAL FELT SPONGY BUT WENT AWAY ON ITS OWN. AFTER THIS MOST RECENT INCIDENT A WEB SEARCH TURNED UP OTHERS HAVING THIS PROBLEM THAT WAS IDENTIFIED AS A POSSIBLE BAD ABS HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED BUT COULD HAVE LED TO HITTING VEHICLES ENTERING INTERSECTION. WEB RESULTS ALSO REVEALED THAT SIMILAR INCIDENTS ARE BEING INVESTIGATED BY THE NHTSA.

DRIVING CAR IN INCLEMENT WEATHER. WAS GOING FORWARD ( STRAIGHT) ON A LOCAL ROAD WITH A DOWNHILL GRADE AT A SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH. USED BRAKE TO MAINTAIN SPEED AS I WAS GOING DOWN THE HILL. THE ABS ENGAGED BRIEFLY AS EXPECTED DUE TO SNOW ON THE ROAD. REMOVED FOOT FROM BRAKE BRIEFLY BUT WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE AGAIN TO STOP AT THE STOP SIGN THE BRAKE DID NOT ENGAGE AS IT USUALLY DOES BUT INSTEAD WENT ALMOST ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BEFORE ENGAGING. STOPPING DISTANCE WAS SIGNIFICANTLY LONGER THAT USUAL. IF I HAD NOT ALLOWED EXTRA STOPPING DISTANCE AS A PRECAUTION DUE TO THE WEATHER I WOULD HAVE DRIVEN THROUGH THE STOP SIGN ON TO A BUSY ROAD. ONCE STOPPED I TURNED LEFT ONTO A FLAT STRAIGHT ROAD. AS I DROVE FORWARD GOING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH I TESTED THE BRAKES 4 ADDITIONAL TIMES OVER A DISTANCE OF APPROXIMATELY A MILE AND A HALF. EACH TIME THE BRAKE PETAL WENT ALMOST TO THE FLOOR BEFORE IT ENGAGED. WHEN IT DID ENGAGE IT TOOK MUCH LONGER TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN. I PULLED INTO A FLAT PARKING LOT AND CALLED A FAMILY MEMBER TO CHECK THE AREA WHERE THE CAR WAS PARKED FOR EVIDENCE OF A BRAKE FLUID LEAK. THERE WAS NONE. I KEPT THE CAR RUNNING FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 - 15 MINUTES THINKING THE ISSUE MIGHT BE RELATED TO THE COLD ( IT WAS ABOUT 20 DEGREE FAHRENHEIT). AFTER ALLOWING THE CAR TO RUN I TESTED THE BREAKING AGAIN BY ACCELERATING AND STOPPING IN THE PARKING LOT. THE BRAKES APPEARED TO BE WORKING AS USUAL. I AM HAVING THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AS I FEEL IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE.
