TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP COMMANDER. WHILE TRAVELING ON SHORT TRIPS, THE ENGINE EMITTED VAPOR FUMES. THE FAILURE DELAYED THE VEHICLE FROM BEING ABLE TO BE RESTARTED FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. PERFORMANCE CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM GEORGESVILLE (1130 AUTO MALL DR, COLUMBUS, OH 43228, (614) 272-0000) TESTED THE VEHICLE, BUT COULD NOT PROVIDE AN EXACT DIAGNOSIS. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO REMEDY THE FAILURE BY TAPING UP THE FUEL LINE. THE FAILURE WAS REMEDIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000.

VEHICLE HAS A RECALL P41/NHTSA 14V-438 THAT WAS ISSUED OVER A YEAR AGO. I RECEIVED A SECOND NOTICE A COUPLE WEEKS AGO THAT THE ISSUE HAD FINALLY BEEN RESOLVED AND TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY LOCAL JEEP DEALER. DEALER IS STILL UNABLE TO ADDRESS THE RECALL AND COULD NOT GIVE A TIME WHEN THE VEHICLE COULD BE SERVICED. THE PROBLEMS WITH THE IGNITION HAVE BECOME MORE FREQUENT OVER THE LAST 3 MONTHS. THIS IS THE 4TH TIME THAT THE CAR HAS SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AND CANNOT MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE BIG RIG TRUCK BEHIND US ALMOST CRASHED INTO THE CAR DUE TO THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF WHILE WE ARE TRAVELING WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. WITH THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF, THE STEERING WHEEL IS LOCKED MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF OTHER VEHICLES. THE CAR EVENTUALLY REDUCES SPEED DOWN TO A HALT. I HAVE TO PLACE THE JEEP IN PARK AND RESTART THE IGNITION. THE TRUCK DRIVER WAS YELLING PROFANITIES OUT THE WINDOW, TELLING ME TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE AND SHOWING OBSCENE GESTURES WHILE I HAVE TWO CHILDREN IN THE CAR WITH ME. I AM SCARED TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE I DO NOT KNOW WHEN IT WILL SHUT DOWN ON ME AGAIN. I TRIED TO START MY 2007 JEEP COMMANDER AND IT WOULD ONLY CLICK. I GOT A TRANSMISSION OVER TEMPERATURE MESSAGE IN THE MESSAGE CENTER. ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS WORKED EXCEPT THE IGNITION. NO ODB CODES APPEARED. THE NEXT DAY IT STARTED AS IF NOTHING IS WRONG. THE FOLLOWING DAY IT FAILED TO START AGAIN. AT THIS TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF 5 TIMES. I HAVE GONE ON THE JEEP COMMANDER FORUM AND FOUND THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. SOME COMMANDER OWNERS HAVE BEEN STRANDED DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. EARLY 2010 I EXPERIENCED ISSUES WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT, "SERVICE PARK ASSIST' AND ALL MY GEARS LIGHTING UP AT ONCE, AND NOT BEING ABLE TO ACCELERATE IN THE MIDDLE OF 65MPH TRAFFIC!. AFTER RESEARCHING THE 'SYMPTOMS' AND TALKING TO SEVERAL MECHANICS IT WAS DISCOVERED THE ESM 'WAS BAD' AND WAS REPLACED. IT BEGAN AT APPROX 55,000 MILES. I WENT THRU QUITE A PROCESS WITH CHRYSLER OVER THIS ISSUE. LONG STORY SHORT, NOW...AMAZINGLY AFTER ANOTHER 60,000 MILES (COINCIDENCE???) I NEED TO HAVE IT REPLACED AGAIN AS ALL THE SAME THINGS ARE HAPPENING? JEEPS USUALLY LAST A LONG TIME, AND THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE WITH MAINTAINING MY VEHICLE OR HOW I DRIVE...SO I WILL HAVE TO POTENTIALLY REPLACE IT AGAIN AND AGAIN? OF COURSE CHRYSLER TELLS ME ITS NOT A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLES YET JUST ON THIS SITE AND LOOKING FOR THE EXACT COMPLAINTS I FIND NO LESS THAN 45 OF THE SAME COMPLAINT AND AT LEAST ANOTHER 100+ THAT ARE PROBABLY THE SAME JUST WORDED DIFFERENTLY. HOW MANY COMPLAINTS DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A COMPANY PAY FOR AND REPLACE DEFECTIVE PARTS? DOES IT TAKE A CERTAIN NUMBER OF FATALITIES?? I HONESTLY DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT JUST GETS IGNORED FORT YEARS AND YEARS. ON TOP OF THAT, THE WORK HAS TO BE DONE AT A DEALER DUE TO CERTAIN TOOLS NEEDED, AND ITS NO LESS THAN $1000 TO REPLACE. WITHIN A WEEK, I WAS DRIVING APPROX. 30 MPHWHENINOTICEDTHEVEHICLEFEELINGLIKE IT HAD A HARD TIME ACCELERATING,WHENITSLOWED DOWN COMPLETELY BUT DID NOT SHUT OFF. PANICKING, I KEPT PRESSINGTHEACCELERATORANDMOVEDTHESHIFTER OUT OF GEAR WHEN THE VEHICLE JERKED AND RESUMED BACK UP TO SPEED. A FEW DAYS LATER THE VEHICLE, WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH COMPLETELY SLOWED DOWN AGAIN BUT DID NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND SERVICE PARK ASSIST ILLUMINATED ONTHEDASHBOARDWITHALL THE GEARS LIT UP AT THE SAME TIME AS IF SAYING THE JEEP WAS IN ALL GEARS AT THE SAME TIME. WITHIN A COUPLE OF HOURS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP, WERE THEY SCANNED THE CODE AND TOLD ME IT WASN'T A "REAL CODE" PROBABLY A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION AND IT SHOULD TURN OFF ON ITS OWN, WHICH IT DID, A DAY LATER. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 8 DIFFERENT TIMES THROUGHOUT THE 5 MONTHS OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE. FINALLY I LOOKED ONLINEFOR RECALLS, THERE IS A POWER-TRAIN AND ELECTRICAL RECALL FOR THE TIME MY JEEP WAS MANUFACTURED, EXPLAINING ALL THE SAME TROUBLES I'VE BEEN HAVING, HOWEVER WHEN I CALLED CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE, I WAS ADVISED I HAD A SIDE AIRBAG RECALL BUT NOTHING ON POWER-TRAIN.WHEN I TOLD THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT THE WARRANTY WAS FOR MY VEHICLE IN THE TIME IT WAS MANUFACTURED SHE TOLD ME IT WASN'T IN THE SYSTEM AND THAT IF I WANTED IT FIXED I WOULD HAVE TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP PAY FOR IT AND KEEP MY RECEIPT AND WHEN CHRYSLER CAME OUT WITH A RECALL FOR MY JEEP I COULD COME FORWARD. MEANWHILE, I'M DRIVING AROUND IN A DOCUMENTED UNSAFE VEHICLE WITH MY 18 MONTH OLD IN THE BACK AND I HAVE TO EITHER WAIT FOR THIS CAR TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAIN AND THEY ISSUE ANOTHER RECALL. I WAS BEGINNING TO ACCELERATE OUT OF A RIGHT TURN AND NOTICED THAT I WAS NOT PICKING UP SPEED AND THE CAR STARTED TO SHAKE. ON OR ABOUT THE ABOVE DATE THE RPMS ON MY VEHICLE RACED UP AND THE CAR SUDDENLY LUNGED FORWARD, IT HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW TIMES AFTERWARD WITHOUT ANY CHECK ENGINE CODES. I HAD IT CHECKED BACK THEN AND NOTHING WAS FOUND BECAUSE NO CODES WERE PRESENT.THIS HAPPENED A COUPLE OF TIMES A YEAR SINCE I OWNED IT, BUT NOTICED IT HAPPENS WHEN IT'S RAINING. TODAY 3/12/2013 (HEAVY RAIN) MY WIFE WAS STOPPED AT A LIGHT AND IT RACED & LUNGED FORWARD JUST MISSING A PEDESTRIAN. I IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT IT TO A NEIHBORHOOD JEEP DEALER & EXPLAINED THE SEVERITY OF THE SITUATION. HE WAS VERY ACCOMODATING AND TOOK IT IN IMMEDIATELY. AFTER A FEW HOURS IN THE SHOP & A TEST DRIVE ,AGAIN, NOTHING FOUND. THERE WERE NO ENGINE CODES PRESENT, ALL OTHER COMPONENTS WERE WITH-IN SPECS. I ASKED IF THIS IS A SIMILAR PROBLEM TO THE 2006 RECALL, HE SAID POSSIBLY, BUT THIS VIN. IS NOT UNDER RECALL. (I BELIVE THE 2006 RECALL WAS THE POWER TRAIN CONTROL MODULE.) I AM NOT SURE WERE TO GO WITH THIS BUT THIS NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED BY JEEP BEFORE AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS. *TR
