Summary of Complaint

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 MAZDA CX-5. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 20V063000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING) HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR WAS NOT YET AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HIS DAUGHTER WAS TURNING INTO THE DRIVEWAY, HE NOTICED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WERE NOT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO RAMSEY AUTO CENTER (9625 HICKMAN RD, URBANDALE, IA 50322) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE HOWEVER, NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.

SERVICE DEPARTMENT FROM DEALER THE CAR WAS PURCHASED SAID THIS IS NOT COVERED BY MAZDA AND IT WOULD BE OUT POCKET REPAIR ($1,200).

Summary of Complaint

PROBLEM WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE LED DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT. I NOTICED THAT THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHT WAS NOT ILLUMINATED FULLY (ABOUT 25% ILLUMINATED) WHILE DRIVING BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE. I EXAMINED THE LIGHT IN MY GARAGE LATER ON AND NOTICED THAT THE LIGHT WAS ALSO FLICKERING IN A RANDOM PATTERN. AFTER DISCOVERING THIS ISSUE, I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO MY DEALERSHIP WHERE I WAS QUOTED $1097.02 PLUS TAXES. $887.02 FOR A NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY AND $210 IN LABOR. I WAS NOT ABLE TO GET COVERAGE UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE I WAS 10K OVER THE 36K LIMIT. WITH TAXES TOSSED IN, I'M LOOKING AT OVER $1200 FOR A HEADLIGHT, WHICH IS COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS! ESPECIALLY FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD AND THAT I HAVE OWNED FOR LESS THAN A YEAR. A QUICK SEARCH ONLINE ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE REVEALED NUMEROUS SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. MAZDA IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND HAS BEEN REPLACING THESE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES WITH A REVISED VERSION THAT ADDRESSES THE ISSUE. A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN INITIATED EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS ISSUE ON FORUMS AND THE NHTSA WEBSITE.

Summary of Complaint

ON 01/10/17 AT 11656 MILES I REPORTED A BURNING SMELL PRESENT CONSISTENTLY FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. LESTER GLENN MAZDA SAID THEY COULDN'T DETECT ANYTHING. I WENT FOR SERVICE 19MAY 18 AND WAS TOLD THAT MY REAR BRAKES WERE BAD. REPORT I HAVE FROM THAT SERVICE SHOWS RED FOR REAR AND GREEN FOR FRONT BRAKES AT 36865 MILES. 26 MAY 18 MAZDA LODI TOLD ME ALL 4 BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE BAD. I ASKED HOW THE FRONT BRAKES WERE BAD 1 WEEK AFTERLESTER GLENN TOLD ME THE FRONT BRAKES WERE GREEN. I WAS TOLD THAT MOST SHOPS HAVE INEXPERIENCED PEOPLE BUT LODI HAS ALL THEIR PEOPLE TRAINED AS MASTER TECHNICIANS. I WAS TOLD LESTER GLENN PROBABLY DIDN'T MEASURE. LODI SAID REARS WERE REALLY REALLY BAD AND THAT I SHOULD REPLACE ALL 4 BRAKES AND ROTORS AND ALL 4 TIRES FOR EVEN WEAR. I WAS TOLD CAR WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE WITHOUT THE WORK. I GOT THE WORK DONE. REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED AT 37354 MILES. 24MAY19 I AM TOLD ALL BRAKES ARE GOOD. I CALL 06 JUN 19 AND COMPLAIN THAT I AM HEARING SQUEAKING. I CALL& I'M TOLD THAT IT'S PROBABLY NOTHING BUT BEST TO SEE IF IT PERSISTS.SOUND PERSISTS. I GO IN24 JUN19 AND COMPLAIN OF NOISE AND VIBRATION THROUGH STEERING WHEEL AND FLOOR BOARD. THE SERVICE MANAGER DRIVES THE CAR WITH ME AND HEARS THE SQUEAK FAINTLYBUT SAYS HE DOESN'T FEEL THE VIBRATION AND THAT THE BRAKES ARE WORKING WELL. I LET THEM CHECK AND AM TOLD THE LEFT REAR CALIPER IS SEIZED. THE CALIPER WENT THROUGH THE PAD TO THE ROTOR AND REAR PADS AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED. I AM STILL HEARING SQUEAKING AND I FEAR IT THE RIGHT REAR CALIPER SINCE IT WASN'T CHANGED. I'VE CHANGED MY REAR PADS AND ROTORS TWICE IN 1YR/20000 MI. I FOUND OUT MY CAR IS AFFECTED BY TSB R052/16C (04-001/18) AND 04-002/19. R052/16C RESULTED IN A PRODUCTION CHANGE IN REAR CALIPERS STARTING IN SEPTEMBER 9 2016. MAZDAUSA WON'T ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEIR DEALERS SHOULD HAVE REPLACED MY REAR CALIPERS OR THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE ISSUED A RECALL.

WHEN I ASKED MY MAZDA DEALERSHIP ABOUT IT THEY SAID "YEAH, WE'VE SEE LOTS OF THOSE PROBLEMS ON YOUR YEAR/MODEL, YOU DEFINITELY NEED TO GET IT FIXED SINCE YOU WILL FAIL YOUR SAFETY CHECK". I ASKED SINCE THIS WAS A "COMMON" SAFETY PROBLEM FOR MY MODEL/YEAR WHY IS THERE NO RECALL FROM MAZDA. MAZDA DEALERSHIP STAFF SHRUGGED AND HANDED ME AN ESTIMATE FOR $1500.00 TO FIX THIS SAFETY RELATED PROBLEM ON MY 2 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. THEY SAID FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA, BUT MAZDA IS NOT PAYING FOR THIS.

THE LEFT FRONT HEADLIGHT ON THE VEHICLE IS FLICKERING AND SOMETIMES GOES OUT. THIS HEADLIGHT IS KNOWN TO HAVE ISSUES AND BASED ON THE PART NUMBERS FROM MAZDA, IT HAS BEEN REDESIGNED MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE PAST 2 YEARS. WITH THIS MANY REDESIGN ATTEMPTS I AM JUST ASSUMING THEY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE HEADLIGHT AND SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL. THIS VEHICLE IS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY AS IT HAS 37,500 MILES AND THE WARRANTY IS ONLY TO 36,000 MILES. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS US TO PAY FOR THE HEADLIGHT WHICH IS $1,500 DOLLARS IN PARTS ALONE. THIS SEEMS OUTRAGEOUS FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD. SEARCHING ONLINE THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH MAZDA AND HAVING A HEADLIGHT GO OUT DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN LET ALONE A QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP CONCERN. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED WITH A RECALL.

THE AUTOMATIC LOCKING DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. I AGREE WITH COMPLAINTS 1090985 AND 10885776 IN THAT IT SEEMS TO BE FINE 90% OF THE TIME, WHICH LULLS YOU INTO A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY. NOW, I MAKE SURE THAT HE LIGHTS FLASH AS I WALK AWAY. I HAD TURNED OFF THE CHIRP BECAUSE IT DISTURBS THE PEACE, BUT MAY TURN IT BACK ON, SINCE WALKING AWAY AND LOOKING BACK ALSO HAS ITS RISKS. I COULD BE WALKING AWAY TOO QUICKLY SOMETIMES OR SOMETHING ELSE IN MY POCKET MAY BE SHIELDING THE KEY FOB, BUT IF OTHERS ARE ALSO EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM, MAYBE IT IS NOT A USER ISSUE. PERHAPS THE OWNER'S MANUAL SHOULD MENTION THESE POSSIBILITIES, IF THEY INDEED ARE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. AN UNLOCKED CAR IS A SERIOUS SECURITY RISK.
