MAZDA WILL NOT INCLUDE MY VEHICLE IN THIS RECALL BELOW BECAUSE IT WAS MFR 07/2006 AND SOLD AS A 2007: 2010-08-13 (PUBLISHED BY NHTSA ON 2010-08-13) RECALL SUMMARY: MAZDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 MAZDA3 AND MAZDA5 VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 2, 2007 THROUGH NOVEMBER 30, 2008. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST COULD OCCUR AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE.HAZARD: POWER STEERING ASSIST IS SUDDENLY LOST REDUCING THE DRIVER'S ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE AS TYPICALLY EXPECTED, AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.REMEDY:MAZDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND LINES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MAZDA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-222-5500. ADDITIONAL INFO: OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV . NHTSA SOURCE: HTTP://WWW-ODI.NHTSA.DOT.GOV/RECALLS/RECALLRESULTS.CFM?START=1&SEARCHTYPE=QUICKSEARCH&RCL_ID=10V374000 MAZDA IS RECALLING 2007 THROUGH 2009 MODEL-YEAR MAZDA3 AND MAZDA5 MODELS FOR AN ISSUE WITH THE POWER-STEERING SYSTEM. THE RECALL FOLLOWS AN INVESTIGATION FROM THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA), LOOKING INTO POWER-STEERING SYSTEM FAILURES IN THE 2007-2009 MAZDA3. ALTOGETHER, 33 COMPLAINTS WERE RECEIVED AND THREE CRASHES WERE ATTRIBUTED TO THE ISSUE. THE RECALL AFFECTS ABOUT 300,000 NORTH AMERICAN VEHICLES ALTOGETHER, INCLUDING SOME 2007 MODELS, ALL 2008 MODELS, AND MOST 2009 MODELS OF THE MAZDA3 AND MAZDA5. A MAZDA SOURCE TOLD THE PUBLICATION THAT RUST CONTAMINATION IN THE VEHICLES' HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEM CAN CAUSE THE PUMP TO OVERHEAT AND SHUT DOWN, SOMETIMES TEMPORARILY. A SERVICE BULLETIN HAS ALREADY BEEN OUT FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. *TR

Summary of Complaint

WHILE DRIVING MY MAZDA 5, WHILE AT A STOP THE CAR IDLES REGULAR FOR ABOUT A MIN THEN IT BEGINS TO LOOSE POWER AND BOGGLE DOWN UNTIL THE ENGINE SHUTS DOWN COMPLETELY. THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR COMES ON. FOR THIS NOT TO HAPPEN I NEED TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDDLE. ACCORDING TO THE DEALER MY VIN NUMBER DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL THAT WAS ISSUED ON THE POWER STEERING ISSUE. I BELIEVE THAT MY 2007 MAZDA 5 ALSO HAS THE SAME PROBLEM, STATED ON THE RECALL FOR THE POWER STEERING ISSUE. THE DEALER REFUSES TO CONSIDER MY CASE UNDER THE RECALL. *TR

SUDDEN POWER STEERING LOSS WHILE DRIVING ON AN ENTRY RAMP OF A HIGHWAY, ACCOMPANIED BY ILLUMINATION OF MULTIPLE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD. STEERING LOSS OCCURRED WHILE VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL WAS TURNED AND VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND PREPARING TO MERGE ONTO HIGHWAY. STEERING WHEEL SUDDENLY AND VIOLENTLY JERKED FROM MY HANDS, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STEER IN THE DIRECTION OFF THE ROAD. DASH LIGHTS (INCLUDING POWER STEERING) FLASHED INTERMITTENTLY, HOWEVER WOULD REMAIN CONSTANTLY ON WHEN STEERING WAS PULLED FROM CENTER POSITION. POWER STEERING LOSS WAS SPONTANEOUS, INTERMITTENT, AND WITHOUT WARNING. VEHICLE DID NOT RECORD ANY DIAGNOSTIC FAULT CODES WHILE LIGHTS WERE DISPLAYED. SYMPTOMS VEHICLE DISPLAYED COINCIDE WITH "RECALL SUMMARY" FOUND DOCUMENTED ON NHTSA RECALL 10V374000 FOR THE 2007 MAZDA5. INCIDENT OCCURRED BRIEFLY AT LOW SPEEDS WHILE PARKING ON 08/23/2019 AND RESOLVED AFTER VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. INCIDENT REOCCURRED WHILE MERGING ONTO HIGHWAY AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED AS DESCRIBED ABOVE ON 08/25/2019. WHILE INCIDENT OCCURS AND LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON DASHBOARD, THE STEERING WHEEL MOTION IS VERY RESTRICTED AND THE WHEEL AUTOMATICALLY FORCES ITSELF BACK TO THE CENTER (NEUTRAL) POSITION. THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD WILL REMAIN CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED WITH ANY MOVEMENT OF THE STEERING WHEEL AWAY FROM THE CENTER/NEUTRAL POSITION. THE RADIO ALSO HAS HELLO DISPLAYED, AS IF THE VEHICLE WAS JUST STARTED, EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND WAS NEVER TURNED OFF.

THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 68,000 MILES. DIAGNOSED AS ALL SUSPENSION NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSING SAID, " I WOULDN'T LET MY MOM DRIVE THAT CAR" AND THAT THE SUSPENSION COULD BLOW OUT AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING. ALL THE ARMS OF THE SUSPENSION ARE BAD/HAYWIRE AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. I NOTICED THAT OTHER 2007 MAZDA 5S HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. HOW I WOULD WISH THAT SOMEONE WOULD PLEASE CHECK IF THIS 2007MAZDA5 SHOULD ALSO BE RECALLED-EVEN THOUGH IT WAS MANUFACTURED IN A DIFFERENT TIMEFRAME THAN THOSE CURRENTLY IN RECALL. IT'S A POSSIBILITY YOU KNOW. PLEASE HELP. THERE IS A VERY LOUD RATTLING SOUND, THUDDING OF TIRES WHEN DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND THE BACK TIRES DON'T FOLLOW OR "ROTATE" WHEN TURNING-THEY "SWING" AND STAY STILL, AS IF THEY LOCK. ALSO, THE CAR FLOODS EXTENSIVELY WHEN IT RAINS.

AT A LITTLE OVER 9,000 MILES THE CAR BEGAN TO HESITATE AND WE RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE FIRST SERVICE TO "FIX" THE PROBLEM. TO FAST FORWARD, HERE WE ARE DEC. 31ST, 2011 AND NOW WE ARE DEALING WITH NOT ONLY HESITATION AND STALLING, BUT NOW THE CAR ACTUALLY "BUCKS" WHILE DRIVING IT ONLY ADDING TO THE DANGERS OF DRIVING IT. THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM AS WE HAVE CONTINUED TO RETURN IT THE SAME DEALERSHIP EACH TIME ONLY TO BE TOLD IT WAS "FIXED". THIS HAS BECOME A SAFETY CONCERN, AND A FINANCIAL WOE. WHY THE LACK OF CONCERN BY MAZDA AND OTHER AGENCIES THAT KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM BUT HAVE NOT MADE MAZDA ADMIT THE PROBLEM AND RECALL THESE CARS BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. NOT EVERYONE IS IN THE POSITION TO JUST BUY ANOTHER CAR IF THEY SEEM TO HAVE A "LEMON". I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW MY RECOURSE IN ALL OF THIS....TO DRIVE A UNSAFE CAR?, TO HOPE I OR A FAMILY MEMBER WON'T BE HURT OF KILLED IN IT UNTIL SUCH TIME I CAN TRADE IT IN? AND THEN FEEL GUILTY THAT SOME OTHER PERSON IS PURCHASING MY UNSAFE CAR? I HOPE THAT THERE IS "SOME HOPE" BY CONTACTING YOUR AGENCY. MY VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION AS I WAS WAITING FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. AS I WAS THEN MAKING A LEFT TURN, I REALIZED THAT I HAD LOST POWER STEERING AND I THOUGHT THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD COMPLETELY LOSE ALL OF ITS POWER AND HENCE, ITS ABILITY TO MOVE AND CAUSE ME TO COME TO A HALT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. THERE WAS AN ONCOMING CAR, SO I JUST STRUGGLED TO TURN THE WHEEL WHILE I PUSHED DOWN THE ACCELERATOR. THANKFULLY, I MADE IT OUT OF THE INTERSECTION ON TIME. HOWEVER, THIS SITUATION COULD HAVE HAD A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT OUTCOME. AFTER IT HAPPENED A NUMBER OF TIMES, I DECIDED TO DO SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON SOME OF THE 2007 TO 2009 MAZDA 5 MODELS DUE TO POWER STEERING LOSS. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY LOCAL MAZDA DEALER, BUT WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I THEN CALLED MAZDA TO HAVE MY VIN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT WAS DENIED BECAUSE I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN 11/09/06, AND THUS CANNOT BE INCLUDED. I FEEL THAT MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND SO I ASK THAT YOU DO INVESTIGATION ON SIMILAR SITUATIONS, AS THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU.

Summary of Complaint

(5/2010) AT MY LOCAL MAZDA DEALER DURING ROUTINE ROTATION MAINTENANCE OF MY TIRES I OBSERVED UNUSUAL WARE ON THE INNER AREAS OF THE TIRE TREAD AREAS AND A GROVE CARVED ON THE INNER SIDES OF THE TIRES. THE GROVE WAS EXPOSING AREAS OF THE STEEL BELT OF THE TIRES. THE FIRST RECOMMENDATION FROM MAZDA WAS TO REPLACE THE TIRES, SOON. AFTER SPEAKING WITH THE MAZDA SERVICE REP HE INFORMED ME THAT THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN KNOWN TO OCCUR IN MAZDA 3'S AND THAT MAZDA CAME OUT WITH A LONGER UPPER CONTROL ARM TO HELP CORRECT THE ALIGNMENT ISSUE WITH THE TIRES. THE MAZDA DEALER INQUIRED AND FOUND NO RECALLS OR BULLETINS WITH THE MAZDA 5 THAT COULD HELP ME PAY FOR THE NEW, LONGER UPPER CONTROL ARMS FOR THE REAR OF MY CAR. THEY DID FIND EVIDENCE THAT SUPPORTED THIS ALIGNMENT ISSUE WITH MAZDA 3'S. MY COST TO REPLACE THE UPPER CONTROL ARMS IN THE REAR OF THE CAR WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $400. AT THAT TIME I PAID TO HAVE MY VEHICLES TIRES REALIGNED AT THE MAZDA DEALER & PURCHASED 4 NEW BRIDGESTONE TIRES FROM A REPUTABLE TIRE GARAGE 2 WEEKS LATER. (12/2010) SIX MONTHS LATER THE SAME WEARING OF THE TIRES WAS NOTICED DURING ROUTINE ROTATION MAINTENANCE OF MY TIRES. THE MAZDA DEALER AGAIN RECOMMENDED THAT I PURCHASE THE LONGER UPPER CONTROL ARMS TO SEE IF THAT CORRECTS THE ISSUE. (1/2011) I THEN CONTACTED MAZDA CORPORATE. THEY WERE SYMPATHETIC AND AGREED THAT THIS ISSUE WAS NOT AN ANOMALY; HOWEVER, THEY WERE UNABLE TO ASSIST ME. THEY COMMENTED THAT SINCE THE DEALER SUGGESTED THIS CORRECTION TO THE ISSUE, THEY SHOULD PROBABLY HELP ME. THE MAZDA DEALER TOLD ME THAT IT IS A MAZDA CORPORATE ISSUE. I DRIVE MY MAZDA 5 IN CONSTANT FEAR THAT THE TIRES WILL BLOW OUT AND I WILL GET IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS SHOULD NOT BE. MAZDA TOLD ME THAT THE CORRECTION IS NEW LONGER CONTROL ARMS. THIS IS A MAZDA SAFETY ISSUE. WHY WOULD I HAVE PAY FOR THE DEFECTIVE UPPER CONTROL ARM TO NOT DRIVE MY CAR IN FEAR OF BLOWING TIRES?
