WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE DRIVER NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE BECAME SHAKY AND WAS DIFFICULT TO CONTROL NEARLY CAUSING THE DRIVER TO GO OFF THE ROAD. DRIVER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO, UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR SUBFRAME HAD NEARLY RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH. THE VEHICLE IS A 2003 WITH AROUND 130,000 MILES. THE VEHICLE IS USED PRIMARILY TO DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK ON PAVED HIGHWAYS. WHEN RESEARCHING THE ISSUE FURTHER, I NOTICED THAT THERE WERE MULTIPLE OTHER OWNERS OF FIRST GENERATION NISSAN MURANOS WHO EXPERIENCED SIMILAR ISSUES, INCLUDING ONE WHOSE FRAME ACTUALLY BROKE IN HALF WHILE DRIVING (THANKFULLY THAT DID NOT HAPPEN IN OUR CASE). THE ISSUE APPEARS TO RELATE TO THE FRAME AND/OR SEALANT ON THE FRAME CORRODING DUE TO THE SALT USED ON THE ROADS DURING THE WINTER TIME IN THE NORTHERN US. OUR VEHICLE IS DRIVEN IN MICHIGAN. NISSAN CONDUCTED RECALLS FOR SIMILAR ISSUES WITH OTHER MODELS (ALTIMA, PATHFINDER AND INFINITY QX4) WHICH SHOWS THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED EVENT. AS SUCH, I FEEL THIS ISSUE IS PRESENTS A SERIOUS SAFETY RISK TO THE DRIVER, PASSENGERS AND OTHER MOTORISTS. I CONTACTED NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOT RECALL AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR THE REPAIR AND THEN SUBMIT A COMPLAINT WHICH WOULD BE ESCALATED TO THE REGIONAL TEAM BUT, THAT THEY WERE UNLIKELY TO PROVIDE ANY SUPPORT. CONTACTED NISSAN SPECIALIST ON A WEBSITE WHO ADVISED IT COULD BE CRANK POSITION AND/OR CAMSHAFT SENSOR(S). I TOOK IT TO FIRESTONE TO HAVE IT SCANNED. POSITIVE FOR CODES P0725(ENGINE SPEED SIGNAL CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION) AND P0340(CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT FAILURE). PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN AUGUST 2003. NEVER NOTIFIED BY NISSAN OF RECALL FOR SENSORS(NHTSA #03V4550000). CALLED LOCAL DEALERSHIP ON 4/9/16 WHO ADVISED ME THAT MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT ON THE LIST FOR MY VEHICLE TO BE REPAIRED, DESPITE HAVING THE SAME COMPLICATION IDENTIFIED BY NISSAN AND NHTSA WHICH NECESSITATED THE RECALL. IN ADDITION, LETTER WRITTEN BY THETECHNICAL COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT OF NISSAN TO THE NHTSA, DATED 12/4/03, CLEARLY STATES THAT MY CAR IS INCLUDED IN THE LIST OF RECALLED VEHICLES. NO UPDATED LETTER OR OTHER PUBLIC INFORMATION FOUND STATING THAT CERTAIN VIN NUMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE CAR REPAIRED. THE REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER LINK WHICH HOLDS THE SUSPENSION TO THE CAR ROTTED OFF AND CAUSED THE SUSPENSION TO FAIL. THE REMAINING METAL IS SEVERELY ROOTED OR PERFORATED. THERE ARE SEVERAL 2003 MURANOS ON THE ROAD. MINE IS ALWAYS GARAGED AND I HAVE KEPT IT WELL MAINTAINED SINCE NEW. NISSANUSA WAS CALLED AND THEY WILL DO NOTHING TO FIX OR PAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM. COMING OFF EXIT RAMP, STOPPED AND TURNED LEFT, WAS GOING AROUND 25 MPH WHEN THE CAR SURGED FORWARD, ACCELERATED, RPM SHOT UP. I HAD TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES AND PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL. THE CAR THEN SLOWED AND BEGAN DRIVING NORMALLY. A WEEK LATER, MY WIFE AND I WERE ON THE INTERSTATE GOING AROUND 60 MPH WHEN THE CAR SLOWED DOWN AS THOUGH IT WAS PUT INTO A LOW GEAR. WE COULD ONLY GET IT TO GO NO MORE THAT 35 MPH. WE PULLED OFF ON THE SHOULDER AND PARKED. THE CAR WOULD NOT START AGAIN. HAD TO TOW IT. ABOUT A MONTH LATER, I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE GOING AROUND 65 WHEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED AS BEFORE, IT WENT INTO A LOWER GEAR, LOWERING MY SPEED TO AROUND 30 MPH WHICH CAUSED ME TO ALMOST GET HIT FROM BEHIND. HAD IT BEEN A LARGE TRUCK IT MOST LIKELY WOULD HAVE HIT ME. I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND PULLED OFF TO THE SHOULDER. WHEN I PULLED OUT AGAIN, IT DROVE AT A NORMAL RATE OF SPEED. I'VE TAKEN IT TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP AND THEY CLAIMED THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE INTERNET IS FULL OF COMPLAINTS FROM MURANO OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS AND STATING THAT LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIPS CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM AND IF THEY DO ANYTHING, THEY CHANGE OUT THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST TO THE OWNER. I PURCHASED THIS CAR FROM A DEALER AS A USED VEHICLE IN SEPTEMBER 2013. AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS I BEGAN TO NOTICE A VERY SERIOUS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. THIS HAS BEEN SCARY AND UNSAFE WHEN DRIVING IN HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS AND I HAVE RUN THE RISK OF REAR ENDING ANOTHER VEHICLE. OTHER TIMES IT HAS BEEN AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD WHEN ENTERING TRAFFIC THAT IS TRAVELING AT A HIGHER SPEED AND YOU HAVE TO SPEED UP TO MERGE. I HAVE READ THAT OTHER NISSAN MURANOS THAT ARE THE SAME YEAR AS MINE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME SAFETY ISSUES AND NISSAN HAS RECEIVED A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS WITH REGARD TO CVT AND FRONT TRANSFER CASE (CRACKS/FRACTURES) ISSUES BUT THAT NISSAN HAS NOT HAD A RECALL TO CORRECT THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM. IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2010 NISSAN EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO COVER THE FAILED CVT TRANSMISSION. THE DEALER REPLACED IT AT NO COST TO ME (NISSAN COVERED THE PARTS AND LABOR). ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 2, 2011 WHILE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA WAS REPLACING THE LOWER OIL PAN GASKET, AND LOWER OIL COOLER HOUSING, THEY NOTICED THE TRANSFER CASE WAS STARTING TO FAIL/CRACK. INFORMED ME THAT WITHIN THE NEXT 6 TO 12 MONTHS THIS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND THIS IS AN 18 HOUR JOB. COST ESTIMATE IS $2,350. THEY SHOULD HAVE INFORMED ME OF THE KNOWN TRANSFER CASE PROBLEM LAST YEAR AT A MINIMUM TO SAVE THE LABOR COST. LOOKING THROUGH THIS LIST, IF YOU HAVE IT SORT FOR "SEATS" IT PULLED UP 82 COMPLAINTS. MOST OF WHICH WERE BROKEN FRAMES THAT THEY (NISSAN) HAD TO REDESIGN. NOW HERE IS THE REAL PROBLEM. I WAS ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY AND I LOST POWER. I RESTARTED THE SUV AND THE ENGINE PRODUCED A VERY LOUD RATTLING NOISE. I HAD IT TOWED TO NISSAN, SINCE THEY SERVICED THIS FROM WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY SOLD AND I LET THEM SERVICE TO PROTECT THE WARRANT AND THEY WOULD HAVE ALL THE RECORDS. WELL, THE TIMING CHAIN BROKE. I WAS TOLD THEY HAVE PLASTIC GUIDES TO GUIDE THE TIMING CHAIN AND THESE WILL WEAR AND CAUSE THE CHAIN TO SLIP. THIS OCCURRED AT 83,000 MILES. NISSAN IS REFUSING TO HELP WITH THE REPLACEMENT ENGINE. THEY WANT $8600 FOR A NEW ENGINE. ON A 2003 IS ABSURD. A USED ENGINE WITH 60,000 MILES AND NO WARRANTY WILL COST $5600. I FEEL THE SERVICE MISDIAGNOSED MY PROBLEM, NEVER SEARCHED FOR THE REAL PROBLEM IN DEC. 09 AND FALSELY PUT ON THE REPORT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND IT WAS LOW ON OIL TO PROTECT THEMSELVES FROM ANY PROBLEMS SINCE DEC. I HAD A EXTENDED WARRANTY, WHICH I CANCELLED WHEN THEY DID NOT COVER ENGINE SEAL LEAK, TIE ROD PROBLEM AND TRANS AXLE SEAL LEAK, IN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY BROCHURE IT MENTIONS ALL THE ABOVE AS COVERED ITEMS. AFTER FIGHTING WITH DEALER AND CORPORATE I CANCELED THE WARRANTY. THE UNCOVERED REPAIRS COST ME OVER $2500. THIS WAS A NISSAN BACKED EXTENDED WARRANTY. I NOW HAVE A COMPLAINT WITH SOMERSET COUNTY WHERE THE DEALER IS LOCATED AND THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY ABOUT ALL THE RED TAPE NISSAN HAS PUT UP TO HAVE COVERED REPAIRS ACTUALLY COVERED.
