WHEN DRIVING OUTSIDE ESPECIALLY DAY TIME AND WHEN HOT AND HUMID, THE CAR'S DASH BECOMES STICKY AND SOFT. I BOUGHT MY CAR NEW IN ALBUQUERQUE, NM AND THE LIVED IN CA, I DID NOT NOTICE THE PROBLEM. NEITHER I RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION FROM TOYOTA DEALERSHIP OR NONE IN THE SERVICE CENTER CHECKED WITH ON THIS ISSUE OR TOLD ME THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AND HENCE NEED TO BE REPLACED AS THEY DID WITH UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE AND POWER WINDOW SWITCH MALFUNCTION. NOW I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS DASH STICKINESS ISSUE AND TOYOTA IN HAWAII IS REFUSING TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE AND SUBSTANDARD PRODUCT THAT THEY HAS PUT IN AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE AS THEY HAVE DONE FOR MILLIONS OF OTHER CUSTOMERS. THE REASON DOE REFUSAL IS THAT MY CAR JUST PASSED 10 YEARS SINCE IT WAS BOUGHT. BUT HAD I BEEN KNOWN OF THIS ISSUE BEFORE EVEN EXPERIENCING IT, I WOULD HAVE GOT IT REPLACED. I HAD BEEN TAKING MY VEHICLE REGULARLY TO TOYOTA SERVICE, BUT NONE BOTHERED TO CHECK ON THIS. SINCE IT IS NOT MY ISSUE AND IT IS BECASUE OF THEY USING A DEFECTIVE PART, THEY SHOULD HELP ME IN REPLACING IT COMPLETELY AT THEIR EXPENDITURE. I AM WITH MY FAMILY AND I AM VERY MUCH CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY AND RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ISSUE AS IT COULD EMIT CHEMICALS BECAUSE OF MELTING OR CHANCES OF FIRE ACCIDENT. APPROXIMATELY 4 MONTHS AGO, MY PASSENGER SIDE DOOR HANDLE HAD BROKEN OFF AS MY HUSBAND ATTEMPTED TO GET INTO THE CAR. THAN THE DOOR HANDLE BEHIND THAT CAME OFF WHEN MY CHILD WENT TO OPEN THE DOOR TO GET INTO THE CAR ABOUT A MONTH LATER. FOLLOWING BOTH THOSE INCIDENTS I WAS UNLOADING GROCERIES AND WENT TO OPEN THE REAR DOOR ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THAT HANDLE JUST CAME OFF. THE ONLY HANDLE REMAINING ON THE CAR IS THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. THERE WAS NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. NO ONE PULLED ON THE HANDLES HARDER TO OPEN THE DOORS. I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS COULD HAPPEN! I HAVE OWNED AND DRIVEN TOYOTAS FOR OVER 20 YEARS, AS WELL AS SEVERAL MEMBERS OF MY FAMILY AND THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED! I DO NOT USE MY CAR FOR ANYTHING LIKE UBER OR LYFT WERE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN USED MORE FREQUENTLY THAN NORMAL AND I FEEL THIS HAS TO BE SOME TYPE OF DEFECT FOR IT TO HAPPEN TO 3 DOOR HANDLES! I AM ALSO CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY ISSUES THIS COULD CAUSE MY FAMILY, ESPECIALLY MY CHILD. Summary of Complaint

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY EXTREME FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AS THE RPMS INCREASED. THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED INTO PARK AND THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF, BUT WAS UNABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 10V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) AND 09V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID NOT HAVE THE RECALL REPAIRS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO TOYOTA WORLD OF NEWTON (66 HAMPTON HOUSE RD, NEWTON, NJ 07860, (973) 383-0200) AND BOTH RECALL REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL AT THE DEALER UNTIL THE MANUFACTURER DETERMINED IF THEY WOULD AUTHORIZE THE ENGINE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES AND WAS TO RESPOND TO THE DEALER AND THE OWNER. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 158,000.

Summary of Complaint

ENGINE FAILED WHILE DRIVING. MY ENGINE WAS REBUILT (4 PISTONS, RINGS AND ALL ASSOCIATED PARTS) BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DUE TO OIL CONSUMPTION FAILURE, LESS THAN 25,000 MILES LATER MY ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING WHILE I WAS DRIVING WITH NO INDICATIONS (NO LIGHTS, NO SMOKE)AT ABOUT 154,000 MILES. 4,000 OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY. WHILE DRIVING THE VSC AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE TEMPERATURE GAGE WENT ALL THE WAY DOWN, WHEN I TRIED TO BREAK TO SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK NOR DID THE GAS. I WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO THE SHOULDER AND LET THE VEHICLE SLOW DOWN NATURALLY UNTIL I POPPED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER OVERHEATED. SERVICE REP SAID I LOST COMPRESSION DUE TO A PRESSURE BUILDING UP IN MY ENGINE, CAUSING THE HEAD GASKET AND RADIATOR TO BLOW. SERVICE REP SAID THEIR IS ALSO A BAD PISTON. TOYOTA SERVICE MANAGER HAS NOT RETURNED MY CALL, CORPORATE SAID THEY ARE PARTNERS WITH THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO.

ON DECEMBER 3, 2017, MY HUSBAND WAS PARKING OUR 2009 CAMRY ON A CITY STREET WHEN WE EXPERIENCED THE TERRIFYING UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEM THAT HAS PLAGUED THIS MODEL ' AND WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN FIXED BY THE FLOOR MAT AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL RECALLS. AS MY HUSBAND SHIFTED INTO DRIVE TO MOVE SLIGHTLY FORWARD IN THE PARKING SPACE, THERE WAS A LOW ROARING, RACING MOTOR-TYPE SOUND FROM THE GEAR BOX/TRANSMISSION AREA AND THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. BRAKING COULD NOT STOP THE CAR AND IT DROVE INTO THE CAR AHEAD OF US. BECAUSE WE WERE MOVING AT LOW SPEED THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO EITHER CAR. BUT THERE WAS PERMANENT DAMAGE TO OUR TRUST IN THE SAFETY AND RELIABILITY OF OUR 2009 CAMRY, WHICH WE VOWED NEVER TO DRIVE AGAIN. OUR OCCASIONAL PRIOR EXPERIENCES WITH THE CAR'S RACING MOTOR PROBLEMS HAD NEVER CAUSED US TO LOSE CONTROL. FOR EXAMPLE, A FEW YEARS AGO WE HAD RACING ENGINE PROBLEM WHEN BRAKING FOR A LIGHT AFTER COMING OFF A HIGH SPEED INTERSTATE. ON BOTH DECEMBER 2 AND DECEMBER 3, 2017, WE HAD A RACING MOTOR EXPERIENCE DURING PARKING WHEN WE WERE IN REVERSE BUT IT DID NOT CAUSE ANY LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. IN EACH OF THESE INSTANCES WE WERE ABLE TO USE THE BRAKES TO STOP THE CAR. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WHO TOOK THE CAR AWAY WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR HALF A BLOCK TO HIS TRUCK WITHOUT EXPERIENCING THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEM.

CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE AT HIGH-SPEED ON THE HIGHWAY. ON JUNE 22, 2017 AT ~ 9:05 AM I WAS TRAVELING SOUTH ON MA RTE 128 IN LEFT PASSING LANE JUST BEYOND THE MANCHESTER EXITS. I WAS IN THE LEFT-HAND LANE IN A CLUSTER OF CARS TRAVELING AT 65-70 MPH. I WAS TRAVELING ~ 70 MPH PASSING THE VEHICLES ON THE RIGHT. THERE WERE CARS BEHIND ME IN THE LEFT-HAND LANE, THE CLOSEST APPROXIMATELY 40-50 FT BEHIND ME. SUDDENLY I HEARD A EXPLOSION UNDER MY CAR. IMMEDIATELY CLOUDS OF A SMOKE-LIKE VAPOR POURED FORTH FROM THE BACK OF MY CAR, FOLLOWED BY A LOSS OF POWER AND A RACKET FROM UNDER THE CAR. I IMMEDIATELY THREW ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND SOMEHOW MADE IT TO THE SIDE OF RT. 128 WITHOUT A COLLISION. LUCKILY NO ONE GOT HURT. FROM ALL THAT I UNDERSTAND ABOUT THE FAILURE, IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE WAS NO OIL IN MY TRANSMISSION, YET I HAD IT SERVICED, INCLUDING AN OIL CHANGE, AT IRA TOYOTA IN DANVERS MA ~ 6 MONTHS AGO. I HAD NO INDICATION OF LOW OIL PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT.

THE ABS LIGHT AND THE RED BOLD BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN OFF AND THE NEXT DAY THE ABS LIGHT AND THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND THE THE SPEEDOMETER WENT TO ZERO, THE TACHOMETER WENT TO ZERO WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, ALSO THE AIR CONDITIONER WOULD NOT WORK, AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE WARNING LIGHTS WENT OFF AND EVERYTHING WORKED FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I DRIVE THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO THE REPAIR SHOP AND THEN CHECKED THE OWNER'S MANUAL AND READ IT'S THE ABS SYSTEM IS MALFUNCTIONING FOR THE CAR.
