WHILE DRIVING MY 2007 CAMRY ON A TOWN HIGHWAY, I SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING. SMOKE STARTED TO FILL THE CABIN, AND I SAW A GLOWING FLAME WHERE THE SEAT WARMER BUTTON IS, ON THE CONSOLE. IMMEDIATELY, I TURNED OFF THE SEAT WARMER BUTTON. I LOOKED FOR A PLACE TO PULLOVER, HEARD A LOUD POPPING SOUND, SAW A LARGER FLAME AND BLACK SMOKE FILLED THE CAR. I PULLED OVER TO A SHELL STATION, CALLED 911, AND A MAN WITH FIRE EXTINGUISHER SPRAYED THE NOW CONSIDERABLE FIRE BURNING . THE BATTERY WAS DISCONNECTED AFTER THE FIRE WAS OUT, AND THE DAMAGE TO THE CAR IS NOT REPAIRABLE. A TOW CAR BROUGHT IT HOME. THE FIRE WAS ELECTRICAL WHEN IT STARTED AND THEN ESCALATED QUICKLY. . MY QUESTION IS WHY DID THE FUSE NOT BLOW TO PREVENT THE FIRE? THANK GOD I WAS IN A TOWN NEAR A SERVICE STATION AND NOT ALONE ON AN ISOLATED ROAD. THE FIRE GREW VERY QUICKLY. THIS JUST HAPPENED THIS EVENING ON 11/19/19. IT WAS A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE, AND IT WAS PRETTY FRIGHTENING HOW QUICKLY THE FIRE ESCALATED. I AM GOING TO CONTACT TOYOTA ABOUT THIS MALFUNCTION AS WELL. THE CASE # BY THE ST. JAMES PARISH SHERIFFF'S OFFICE IS SJP19002613. I CALLED 911 AND 4 POLICE CARS AND FIRE TRUCK WERE DEPLOYED AND CAME TO THE SCENE.

DASHBOARD ON 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY XLE IS MELTING. NOTICED SEVERAL MONTHS BACK THAT IT WAS TACKY TO THE TOUCH AND SEEMED TO GET WORSE AS THE WEATHER HEATED UP. GLARE IS BECOMING MORE OF A PROBLEM, SPECIFICALLY ON HOT SUNNY DAYS, MELTING DASHBOARD PUT A SMALL GOUGE IN THE DASHBOARD WHEN SOMETHING WAS SET ON IT AND THEN MOVED. DEBRIS AND DUST IS ALSO COLLECTING ON THE DASHBOARD. WILL BECOME MORE HAZARDOUS AS TIME GOES ON. CALLED BOTH TOYOTA AND THE DEALERSHIP. TOYOTA INFORMED ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT ON RECALL LIST AND TOO WAIT TO SEE IF ANOTHER RECALL WOULD BE ISSUED. DEALERSHIP WANTS TO CHARGE OVER $2,000 FOR PART AND LABOR. I HAVE KEPT MY CAR IN THE GARAGE AND DASHBOARD HAS SEEMED A LITTLE SLOWER TO DETERIORATE COMPARED TO OTHERS, BUT NOW THAT IT IS BREAKING DOWN, WILL MOST LIKELY DECLINE QUICKER. A PROBLEM CREATED BY TOYOTA ALSO AFFECTS RESALE AND TRADE IN VALUE OF THE VEHICLE AT NO FAULT OF THE OWNER.

"2007-2011 TOYOTA CAMRY'S WERE INSTALLED WITH A SUN VISOR THAT WAS LATER RECALLED DUE TO A DEFECT IN THE INNER PLASTIC BODY. ... MAKING THE ARM UNABLE TO HOLD THE VISOR IN PLACE EFFECTIVELY, INCREASING THE RISK OF IT OBSTRUCTING THE VIEW OF THE DRIVER." THIS SHOULD NOT BE BROKEN, AND IF THERE WAS A PREVIOUS RECALL, I WOULD TO HAVE THIS FIXED.

THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP 3 YEARS AGO AND IT ONLY HAD 42,000 MILES. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DID NOT SHIFT PROPERLY AND WOULD JERK SUDDENLY AS IT SHIFTED IN LOWER GEARS. RECENTLY I WAS HEARING NOISE FROM THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHERE THE TRANSMISSION IS LOCATED. BROUGHT IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT ORIGINALLY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION. THEY SAID THAT IT WAS THE WATER PUMP AND THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION. THE DIAGNOSIS DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT TO ME AND SUSPECTED MAYBE THE DEALER DIDN'T WANT TO ADMIT THAT THE TRANSMISSION THEY HAD REPLACED WAS HAVING PROBLEMS AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR A SECOND OPINION. THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING. KEEP IN MIND THAT THE CAR HAS NEVER LEAKED FLUID AND HAS NEVER OVERHEATED WHICH ARE SYMPTOMS OF WATER PUMP PROBLEMS. I DECIDED TO HAVE THEM CHANGE THE WATER PUMP SINCE TWO SEPARATE TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS WERE TELLING ME THIS WAS THE PROBLEM AND WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE NOISE. DROVE THE CAR HOME AND THE GRINDING NOISE WAS STILL THERE. I DECIDED TO GIVE IT SOME TIME AND MAYBE THE NOISE WOULD GO AWAY EVENTUALLY. TWO DAYS AFTER GETTING THE CAR WORKED ON THE NOISE GOT LOUDER. I DECIDED TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO HAVE THE DEALER CHECK IT AGAIN. ON MY WAY THERE, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP GEARS. IT GOT A POINT WHERE THE CAR COULD BARELY DRIVE 20 MILES/HR. MY TRANSMISSION WENT COMPLETELY OUT AT A BUSY INTERSECTION. THE TRANSMISSION IS BROKEN. WHAT REALLY FRUSTRATES ME IS THAT I HAVE ONLY PUT 23,000 MILES ON THE SECOND TRANSMISSION AND NOW IT IS GOING TO NEED A 3RD TRANSMISSION. MY SAFETY HAS BEEN AT RISK AND THE CAR NEVER GAVE ME A CHECK ENGINE WARNING.
