Summary of Complaint

(COMBINATION METER PROBLEM) WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT ON THE FREEWAY THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL (DASH BOARD) STARTED BLINKING ON AND OFF. FOR OUR SAFETY, WE DECIDED TO SLOW DOWN AND EXIT THE FREEWAY AND STOP IN A SAFE AREA. WE TURNED THE IGNITION OFF, THEN STARTED THE CAR, WITH NOTHING APPEARING ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL BESIDE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. WE LOST THE SPEEDOMETER, ALL GAUGES AND ALL THE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS WHICH NORMALLY HELPS TO GUIDE OUR DRIVING.WE HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER THE FOLLOWING MORNING WHICH TOOK SEVEN DAYS TO REPLACE THE COMBO METER. I LATER FOUND OUT THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT KNEW AND THERE WAS A LETTER ISSUED BY TOYOTA TITLED (2004 TO CERTAIN 2009 MODEL YEAR PRIUS VEHICLES COMBINATION METER WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTICE). THE LETTER STATED THAT THEY HAD PROBLEMS WITH SOME OF THESE PRIUS YEAR MODELS AND THAT IF THE OWNER DID NOT EXPERIENCE THIS CONDITION TO FILE THE LETTER IN THEIR VEHICLE'S OWNER'S WARRANTY INFORMATION BOOKLET. HERE IS MY REQUEST: THIS SHOULD NOT BE A WARRANTY ISSUE BUT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY RECALL AS DEPENDING OF THE NUMBER OF MILES THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN, THIS ISSUE SEEMS TO SOONER OR LATER OCCUR. I REPAIRED MY VEHICLE AND PAID FOR ALL THE REPAIRS, ALL I NEED NOW IS FOR THE NHTSA TO LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM, INVESTIGATE IT AND HAVE TOYOTA SEND A RECALL LETTER RATHER THAN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THIS WAY I CAN RECEIVE A REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIRS. HERE IS A LINK TO THE LETTER AND ALL CONSUMERS COMPLAINTS: HTTPS://WWW.TOYOHEADQUARTERS.COM/THREADS/2004-2009-TOYOTA-PRIUS-COMBINATION-METER-WARRANTY-EXTENSION-ZTV.174/ I BELIEVE FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL PRIUS DRIVERS IN THE USA, THIS SHOULD BE CHANGED TO A RECALL SINCE MANY OF THESE MODEL AND YEAR PRIUS VEHICLES ARE STILL ON THE ROAD AND WILL REACH A CERTAIN MILEAGE TO MAKE TO COMBINATION METER FAIL.

Summary of Complaint

I WAS DRIVING THE PRIUS ON CITY STREETS IN RAIN. I CAME TO A STOP AND STARTED TO DRIVE AND A BUNCH OF EMERGENCY LIGHTS AND BEEPING STARTED. THERE WAS NO UNUSUAL NOISE OR GRINDING UNTIL I APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD AND HAD SIGNIFICANTLY LOST BRAKING POWER. ALL LIGHTS AND BEEPING CONTINUED AFTER TURNING OF AND RESTARTING THE PRIUS. I TOOK IT TO A CERTIFIED TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A BAD BRAKE ACTUATOR. AS BEING A PRIUS OWNER I'VE DONE MY RESEARCH AND KNOW THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS AND THAT 9 MONTHS AGO TOYOTA WAS REPLACING THIS PART FOR FREE. I FEEL LIKE TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM AS MY PRIUS ONLY HAS 80K MILES AND A 3 THOUSAND DOLLAR REPAIR IS PRETTY OUTRAGEOUS FOR A CAR THAT HASN'T EVEN HIT 100K MILES.

Summary of Complaint

2004 TOYOTA PRIUS WITH HID OPTION. ONE OR BOTH HID HEADLIGHTS GO OUT WHILE PARKED OR DRIVING. TURNING THE LIGHT CONTROL ON AND OFF WILL TEMPORARILY SOLVE THE ISSUE. THE ISSUE IS RANDOM IN NATURE. FOR INSTANCE, I NOTICED ONE HEADLIGHT WENT OUT THIS MORNING AND BEFORE I COULD TURN THE SWITCH TO RESET THE OTHER HEADLIGHT WENT OUT, LEAVING ME IN THE DARK ON THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE MAY BE PARK OR IN MOTION. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO DIRECT RELATION TO ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING ON RURAL ROADS WITH NO STREET LIGHTS. IT APPEARS TO ME TO BE A BALLAST ISSUE. THIS REPAIR REQUIRES WORKING WITH HIGH VOLTAGE COMPONENTS AND GOES BEYOND THE SCOPE OF A DIY PROJECT. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR ME, BUT ONLY RECENTLY HAVE BOTH HEADLIGHTS STARTED TO FAIL AT THE SAME TIME. THANK YOU.

Summary of Complaint

HEADLIGHTS WOULD RANDOMLY GO OUT COMPLETELY AND WOULD VERY QUICKLY HAVE TO TURN THEM OFF AND THEN BACK ON TO GET THEM TO WORK. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN VERY OFTEN BUT THEY DID OCCUR UNEXPECTEDLY AND CAUSED EXTREMELY UNSAFE CONDITIONS WHILE DRIVING.

Summary of Complaint

A DRIVER IN FRONT OF ME TOLD ME ABOUT ONE WEEK AGO THAT MY HEADLIGHTS WERE GOING ON AND OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING. THEN YESTERDAY WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, ANOTHER DRIVER GOT OUT OF HIS CAR TO TELL ME THAT MY LIGHTS HAD GONE OFF. I HADN'T NOTICED A CHANGE MYSELF, BUT THEN I PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND CUT MY LIGHTS ALL THE WAY OFF AND CUT THEM BACK ON AND THEN THE LIGHT WAS MUCH BRIGHTER. THIS IS NOT A CONSISTENT PROBLEM. SOMETIMES THE LIGHTS STAY ON FINE AND THEN THEY GO OUT RANDOMLY. THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE A PATTERN TO WHEN THIS IS HAPPENING. BUT IF I CUT THE LIGHTS OFF AND THEN BACK ON, THE PROBLEM WILL FIX TEMPORARILY. I HAVE SEEN ON SEVERAL FORMS THAT MANY PEOPLE WITH 2004-2006 PRIUSES ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. *TR

Summary of Complaint

INTERMITTENT HEADLIGHT PROBLEM. I PURCHASED THE CAR WITH 111,500 MILES ON IT, AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT THE PASSENGER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT IS INTERMITTENT WHEN VIEWING MY REFLECTION IN THE BUMPER OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. SOMETIMES IT RUNS FINE FOR OVER AN HOUR, OTHER TIMES IT DOESN'T LAST 5 MINUTES. TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF, AND IMMEDIATELY BACK ON RELIGHTS THE HEADLIGHT. THIS IS NOT ONLY HAPPENING AT NIGHT, BUT ALSO DURING THE DAY WHEN THEY ARE USED AS DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS. I MADE A VIDEO OF IT HAPPENING: HTTP://TINYURL.COM/INTERMITTENTPRIUSHID I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON HAVING THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR PRIUS. OTHERS HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM WITH 25,000 TO 40,000 MILES. IT IS VERY HARD TO NOTICE BECAUSE THE HID HEADLIGHTS ARE SO BRIGHT IT IS HARD TO TELL WHEN ONE IS NOT WORKING, WHICH ACTUALLY MEANS THIS PROBLEM MAY HAVE EXISTED ON MY PRIUS FOR A LONG TIME WITHOUT THE PREVIOUS OWNER NOTICING. TO ILLUSTRATE MY POINT, THIS PRIUSCHAT THREAD HAS OVER 870 RESPONSES TO DATE REGARDING THIS HID HEADLIGHT PROBLEM: HTTP://PRIUSCHAT.COM/FORUMS/GEN-II-PRIUS-CARE-MAINTENANCE-TROUBLESHOOTING/34584-HEADLIGHT-PROBLEM-17.HTML THUS FAR I HAVE NOT NOTICED THIS PROBLEM IN MY DRIVER'S SIDE. THIS IS A VERY REAL SAFETY CONCERN. *TR

Summary of Complaint

CAR: 2004 TOYOTA PRIUS PROBLEM: INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF BOTH HEADLIGHTS WHILE DRIVING. LAST NIGHT WHILE DRIVING ALONG AN UNLIT COUNTRY ROAD, BOTH HEADLIGHTS FAILED SIMULTANEOUSLY. AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON BY TURNING ON AND OFF THE HEADLAMPS USING THE STALK MOUNTED SWITCH. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. SEE THE TOYOTA RECALL WEBSITE AND TRY THIS SEARCH, "TROUBLE SHOOTING PRIUS HID BULB AND HID ECU", AND YOU WILL GET THIS RESULT,"FOUND: 62255 RESULTS FOR "TROUBLE SHOOTING PRIUS HID BULB AND HID ECU". BUT THE SITE ONLY ALLOWS YOU TO SEE AND ACCESS 45 OTHER "OTHER RESULTS", THAT ARE VERY GENERIC AND TALK ABOUT OTHER TOYOTA MODELS. WHY CAN'T THE PUBLIC SEE THE 62,255 SEARCH RESULTS. ALSO CHECK THE FORUM AT "HTTP://PRIUSCHAT.COM/FORUMS/GEN-II-PRIUS-CARE-MAINTENANCE-TROUBLESHOOTING/47938-MY-HID-BULB-REPLACEMENT-MY-06-PRIUS.HTML". THERE ARE 175 POSTS DATING BACK TO 2008. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE TO HAVE ALL THE LIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY FAIL IN ANY VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD AND DESERVES THE ATTENTION OF THE NHTSA RIGHT NOW. *TR

Summary of Complaint

I HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA PRIUS. I FIND THAT WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES ON A ROAD SURFACE WITH BUMPS, THERE APPEARS TO BE A LAG BEFORE THE BRAKES ENGAGE. THIS IS ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE WHEN DRIVING DOWN A HILL. THE BRAKES DO NOT HESITATE TO ENGAGE ON LEVEL ROAD SURFACES. I ALWAYS ATTRIBUTED THIS TO THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGING, BUT AFTER THE RECENT RECALL OF THE 2010 PRIUS FOR A SIMILAR COMPLAINT, I FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO AT LEAST ADVISE OF THIS SITUATION. *TR
