My 2017 Prius is having headlight failure. I was told by my neighbor that my headlight was out. I bought a new one and went to replace it but they were both working. Thought it was a defective bulb so waited to replace it. I check both headlights when I come to a stop behind a car so I can check the reflection of the headlights. Sometimes they are both on sometimes only one is on, Occasionally both are OUT. What I have noticed is when I turn on the car, immediately the headlights are bright,(not high beam) and immediately go dim. This acts like a bad contact or high resistance somewhere in the circuit. The headlights going on and off seems to be a circuit breaker of some kind. Fortunately I don't drive much at night, however I am having to drive more at night and the possibly of the headlights both failing is TERRIFYING. I started to research the problem and it seams I am not the only person having the problem. The internet is full of other people having the same problem. It seems that nothing is being done about it. I am hoping that Toyota is NOT deciding to just let the people kill themselves because it will be nearly impossible to prove that the headlights were out at the time of the accident so they will not have to pay a lawsuit and not have to fix a recall problems. I am 74 years old and been an auto mechanic all my life so I know about automobiles and wiring. I doubt that anything will be done, and wonder how many people have been killed because no one will dig deep enough into the problem to find the problem and fix it.

MY ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND MASTER BRAKE LIGHT CAME UP ON THE DASH. THE PROBLEM IS A FAILING BRAKE ACTUATOR, WHICH IS A KNOWN ISSUE BY TOYOTA. SPOKE TO TOYOTA A DWAS TOLD THAT I AM OUT OF THEIR TEN YEAR EXTENDED WARRENTY FOR THIS ISSUE AND IT WOULD BE A ROUGHLY $2700 REPAIR. WHY THIS BRAKE ACTUATOR WAS NEVER PLACED AS A RECALL IS BEYOND ME AS A COMPLETE FAILURE IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. TOYOTA REFUSES TO BUDGE ON THEIR "EXTENDED" WARRENTY FOR A KNOWN DEFECTIVE PART, THAT WOULD CAUSE A SERIOUS HAZARD IF IT FAILED WHILE DRIVING.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SALINAS TOYOTA (700 AUTO CENTER CIR, SALINAS, CA 93907, (831) 444-0700) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS AN INTERNAL BRAKE FLUID LEAK; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS EXCLUDED FROM THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY CAMPAIGN. THE MANUFACTURER INDICATED THAT THE OBT2 SENSOR DID NOT SHOW THE SPECIFIC DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TO RECEIVE THE BRAKE ACTUATOR REPLACEMENT COVERED BY THE CAMPAIGN. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO HONOR THE WARRANTY CAMPAIGN FOR DTC NUMBER: C1240. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000. *TT CONSUMER STATED SMOKE STARTED COMING UNDER THE HOOD. I BECAME AWARE THE PAST FEW MONTHS THAT MY RIGHT HID HEADLIGHT WAS GOING OFF AND ON WHEN I WAS DRIVING. I WAS FIRST ALERTED TO IT BY OTHER CARS FLASHING ME. THEN TIME WOULD GO BY AND IT SEEMED TO WORK. YET, THE PROBLEM RETURNED. ONE TIME THE LEFT LIGHT WENT OUT AS WELL, AND I WAS WITHOUT EITHER LIGHT. BUT GENERALLY IT IS JUST THE RIGHT LIGHT. IF I TURN THE LIGHT SWITCH OFF AND ON, THEN BOTH LIGHTS WORK, AGAIN USUALLY UNTIL I GET HOME, I AM AWARE THAT THESE EXPENSIVE BULBS (MORE THAN $600 FOR BOTH) ARE THE COMMON SOLUTION, BUT I KNOW SOMEONE WHO HAD THE REPLACEMENT BULBS GO OUT, AS WELL ,AFTER A FEW MONTHS. SO IT MUST BE THE CIRCUIT. I WILL TRY TO LIMIT MY DRIVING TO DAY TIME, AND TO BE DILIGENT TO REMEMBER TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR SUDDEN LIGHT FAILURE AND SWITCH,THE LIGHTS ON AND OFF.
