THE ABS BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY IS FAILING ON MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS, CREATING UNPREDICTABLE AND DANGEROUS BRAKING. IT IS A $3,000 REPLACEMENT THAT, UP UNTIL THE END OF 2017, TOYOTA WAS REPLACING AT NO CHARGE, BUT NO LONGER, UNDER A WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM, ZG1, ACKNOWLEDGING THAT THIS PART IS DEFECTIVE. I WENT ON LINE AND DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR 2007 TOYOTAS. THIS SHOULD NOT BE JUST A VOLUNTARY "WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT," BUT A MANDATORY RECALL TO FORCE TOYOTA TO FIX THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT. THIS DEVICE RUNS ALMOST CONSTANTLY WHEN IT SHOULDN'T, CREATES A DRAG ON THE CAR THAT HAS CUT MPG IN HALF, IS PROBABLY WEARING OUT THE BRAKES PREMATURELY, AND CAUSES DANGEROUSLY SLOW ACCELERATION FROM A STOP THAT HAS RESULTED IN SOME NEAR ACCIDENTS. I PRESUME THE ABS FUNCTION WOULD NOT WORK WHEN CALLED UPON. THE REPAIR COST IS ABOUT HALF THE RETAIL VALUE OF THE CAR, AND IT SEEMS UNFAIR THAT JUST BECAUSE THIS SHOWED UP AFTER THEIR PROGRAM ENDED, I HAVE TO FOOT THE ENTIRE BILL, OR JUNK A CAR THAT IS OTHERWISE IN PERFECT SHAPE. THERE ARE 150K MILES ON THE CAR, LOW FOR A TOYOTA OF THIS AGE. I HAVE ATTACHED THE TOYOTA ZG1 LETTER THAT I FOUND ON LINE. PLEASE CONSIDER AN IMMEDIATE RECALL ON THIS BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY AND MAKE TOYOTA FIX IT FOR EVERYONE.

THE BRAKES DID NOT RESPOND WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH, AND THE CAR STARTED MAKING A LONG SUSTAINED HIGH-PITCHED ELECTRONIC BEEP. THE LIGHTS FOR THE PARKING BRAKE, ABS, AND ANOTHER LIGHT I'M UNFAMILIAR WITH WERE ON. WHEN I PUMPED ON THE BRAKES, THEY FELT UNRESPONSIVE. I TRIED AGAIN BUT KEEPING DOWN ON THE BRAKE AND IT WAS VERY SLOW TO RESPOND. I MANAGED TO GET OFF THE FREEWAY. AT SLOWER SPEEDS I WAS ABLE TO GET THE BRAKES TO WORK, BUT SLOWING DOWN EVEN FROM LESS THAN 20 MPH TOOK SEVERAL YARDS. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY SAID IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY, BUT THE WARRANTY EXPIRED IN DECEMBER 2017. AS THE OWNER OF THE CAR, I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED ABOUT THIS KNOWN ISSUE, AND NOT TOLD ABOUT THE WARRANTY, EVEN THOUGH I HAD BEEN TAKING MY CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR SCHEDULED SERVICE. THE PART ITSELF IS OVER $2000, BEFORE LABOR, WHICH I CANNOT AFFORD. SO I CAN NO LONGER DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE I CANNOT AFFORD THE REPAIRS. AND I NEARLY DIED DRIVING WITH A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE THAT I BELIEVE SHOULD HAVE WARRANTED A FULL SAFETY RECALL.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDED THAT THE HYBRID BATTERY MIGHT BE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE HYBRID BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WITH A 12-VOLT REGULAR BATTERY. THE BATTERY WAS NOT REPLACED. TWO HOURS LATER, WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING, THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR STARTED TO BLINK. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE CONTACT NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND CALLED AAA. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WERE TWO HOLES AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE. THE TECHNICIAN ALSO FOUND A PIECE OF METAL THAT FRACTURED FROM THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 138,000.

MILEAGE ON VEHICLE AT THE TIME WAS 128,451. BRAKE ACTUATOR FAILED AGAIN. THIS TIME VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP WHILE DRIVING ON RESIDENTIAL STREET. BRAKE WARNING LIGHT AND ALARM WENT ON BRIEFLY. DROVE VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP. DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS BRAKE ACTUATOR FAILING AGAIN. CURRENT MILEAGE ABOUT 170,000. LUCKILY BOTH TIMES NOBODY WAS HURT, NO PROPERTY WAS DAMAGED. HOWEVER, I DON'T BELIEVE IT THAT A VEHICLE SHOULD SUDDENLY NOT BE ABLE TO BRAKE DUE TO A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION, ESPECIALLY 42,000 MILES APART.

THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED WHENEVER THE DONUT TIRE IS BEING USED ON THE VEHICLE AS A TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT FOR A FLAT TIRE - THIS HAS OCCURRED ON BOTH THE TWO OCCASIONS THAT IN WHICH I HAVE HAD TO USED THEM BOTH TIMES ON THE FRONT TIRES, ONCE ON THE LEFT TIRE AND THE SECOND OCCASION, MOST RECENT ON THE LEFT. APPARENTLY, THE DONUT TIRE BECAUSE OF ITS SMALLER DIAMETER CAUSES THE CAR'S SLIP DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEM TO ACTIVATE (SURMISED BY THE ICON I SEE ON THE DASH WHEN THIS OCCURS), OFTEN FOR PERIODS OF HALF THE DRIVING TIME - WHAT THEN HAPPENS IS THAT THERE IS A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER TO THE DRIVE CHAIN, THE CAR CANNOT ACCELERATE OR EVEN MAINTAIN SPEED - IT ESSENTIALLY COASTS OR SLOWS. THIS OCCURS EVEN WHEN/IF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS DEPRESSED TO TRY TO FEED POWER TO THE WHEELS - THE ENGINE IS UNRESPONSIVE. INTERMITTENTLY, THE POWER IS RESTORED, AND THEN THE CYCLE BEGINS AGAIN. ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THIS LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, I CONSIDER MYSELF LUCKY NOT TO HAVE. USE OF A DONUT TIRE IS THE ONLY OPTION OPEN TO TEMPORARILY REPLACING A FLAT TIRE. APPROX 12/19/12 I WENT OUTSIDE TO START MY 2007 PRIUS. WHEN I HIT THE POWER BUTTON THE CAR STARTED UP, HOWEVER THE DASHBOARD LITES DID NOT WORK (SPEEDOMETER, GAS GAUGE, HEAT, A/C, ETC). I PULLED THE CAR BACK INTO MY DRIVEWAY, PUT IT IN PARK AND HIT THE POWER BUTTON, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT SHUT DOWN. I HELD THE POWER BUTTON FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME AND THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT SHUT DOWN. I SAT IN IT (IN 32 DEGREE WEATHER) FOR ABOUT 20 MIN. AND IT SHUT DOWN ON ITS ON. ON THE FOLLOWING DAY I TOOK THE CAR TO TOYOTA & LEFT IT THERE ALL DAY LONG. THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE WHY IT HAD MALFUNCTIONED BECAUSE THE BATTERY CHECKED OUT GOOD AND ALL THE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS WERE ALL GOOD. I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN AGAIN ON 01/13/13 AND ON TODAY, 01/20/13. I DO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A SAFETY VIOLATION THAT TOYOTA REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE AND I JUST WANT MY COMPLAINT DOCUMENTED IN THE EVENT SOMETHING SERIOUS HAPPENS AS A RESULT OF THIS SITUATION.
