WE WERE ON FREEWAY WHEN AN ODD SMELL WAS DETECTED. THERE WERE SEVERAL LARGE TRUCKS IN THE AREA AND WE PASSED OFF THE SMELL TO THE TRUCKS. All the brake lights, ABS, and VSC lights came on, lucky I was not on the road. Now my brakes are mushy and I'm driving without any safety. I learned of the Customer Support Program - ZJB, but it expired for my 2010 Prius w 85k miles on 8/31/2021. I called Toyota Cooperate Office, they could not care less. They told me it is expired, bye! They need to make this a recall as the it is a major KNOWN problem for many cars. Repairs will run $3500 plus. This is my 2nd Toyota I bought brand new, and my last if Toyota is not willing to help.

Traction control, ABS, and brakes come on all at once and brakes don’t work properly. This happened a few times on the freeway and thank god I didn’t get into a crash. Car doesn’t feel safe to drive. I took the car to a mechanic to check the codes and the code C1391 (abnormal leak in accumulator) came up. I see that this is a very common problem with Gen 3 Prius’. Toyota has not called these car even though the problem seems to happen to all Prius’s of that generation. This is very dangerous and I fear driving my car and that the brakes might completely fail potentially causing a crash at accelerated speeds.

Summary of Complaint

Our Prius started showing brake issues in June 2021 that has us concerned about safety. The car lurches when the brakes are pressed, and the brake functions inconsistently. This seems to fall under the “brake booster pump assembly with master cylinder” issue that many others have complained about. When we called Toyota, they said a letter was issued in April 2019, but when we took the car in for diagnostics in August 2019, the brake issue (diagnostic code) didn’t appear then. So they said they won’t fix the hazardous defect. Even more troublesome is the fact that this issue has caused crashes and injuries in the past, and Toyota hasn’t issued a recall. Please help consumers hold Toyota accountable for putting their customers in harm’s way.

Summary of Complaint

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH on the highway, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. The contact depressed the brake pedal harder and the vehicle almost came to a complete stop. The ABS warning light, the brake warning light, and the traction control warning light illuminated. The contact stated that she exited the highway and was able to continue to drive by slightly depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that there was an internal malfunction of the brake booster and the brake booster assembly pump. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact contacted the manufacturer and inquired about assistance with repairing the vehicle under an unknown customer satisfaction program. The manufacturer informed the contact that the failure was not a safety issue and they could not assist as the customer satisfaction program had already expired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

My daughter was driving the vehicle on highway and all dashboard lights came on. Abs brake and traction. The brakes would not work. She had to decelerate and pull off and turn car off. Terrifying. Got it checked at Toyota. Told them about that and how car lunges forward when brakes hit on a bump or pothole. We had to pay 2500 to replace brake booster which had an “internal error”. Got car back and all lights came back on. I’m literally terrified to drive my car because of what may happen. Toyota refuses to recall and fix whatever this issue is.

I was driving my vehicle through a state park, on a mountainous road that’s curvy and hilly. I was going about 35-40mph up a hill. As I was accelerating up this hill, my cars break light notifications all went off. 3 of them; stability control, ABS and one other. When I got to the top of the hill, I had to go back down a hill. I tried hitting the brakes and they were extremely weak. I could barely slow down or stop safely. I knew I had about 5 more minutes of driving left through this park so I went 5 miles an hour to not run into trees or slide off the road around a curve. I immediately got to a parking lot and called for a tow truck to take my vehicle to the dealership. When it was dropped off I received a phone call from the dealership saying my brake actuator had gone out. It will be $2,655 to fix… the part? $2000. Apparently there was an extended warrantee on this part. That ended on 12/31/2021 or 150,000 miles. My incident happened on 1/26/22 (less than 4 weeks later) with 153,059 miles on my vehicle. I contacted Toyota Corporate and was told they couldn’t do anything about it. I was given a ticket number of 220127001781. I told them I never received a notification and begged for mercy on this part. I told them my phone number and email had never changed since buying the vehicle. I called another mechanic and was advised that there were 44 people on the waitlist for this exact part. I’m only 26 days and 3,059 miles over each warrantee and they’re refusing to help for a $2,000 part that is CLEARLY a safety problem for this vehicle.

Summary of Complaint

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that she was hit by another vehicle while turning left onto a highway at 5 MPH. The contact was hit on her driver-side door at approximately 60 MPH and the airbags did not deploy upon impact. The contact stated that the driver seat had collapsed backward onto the rear driver seat which sent her over the steering wheel and into the windshield. The contact lost consciousness upon impact and when she came to, her hands were dangling over the steering wheel with her head pinned to the windshield glass. The contact was removed from her vehicle by authorities and was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The contact was treated for a broken sternum, four broken ribs, two on both the left and right side of her body, and severe bruising on both the left and right side of her entire body. The contact stated that five occupants inside the other vehicle were all transported to the hospital including a four-year-old child whose car seat broke upon impact. The whereabouts and injuries of the occupants are unknown. A police report was filed at the scene. The vehicle was towed to an independent tow yard but had yet to be destroyed. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 117,000. The VIN was not available.

Summary of Complaint

It's the exact issue from the ZJB customer support program. The brake booster is faulty. All the brake warning lights came on all at once. A few weeks ago the brakes were starting to make a noise so I brought it to the Toyota dealer and also called Toyota customer care. The dealer ran a diagnostic and said the booster needed to be replaced but Toyota customer care wouldn't cover the $3500 fix because the customer support program ended on Aug 31 2021. The extension of the ZJB program covered 10years or 150,000 miles. Even though my Prius is a 2011 and got the diagnostic done in 2021, they said I was technically past the 10 year mark because evidently my Prius was initially purchased in September of 2011 and I had the problem diagnosed in Dec of 2021. Three months late. I've spend hours on the phone with Toyota pleading my case and they have been of no help. They know this is a problem. There's a class action lawsuit. There's been petitions. This issue needs to be recalled.

My husband and I bought a 2011 Toyota Prius 7 months ago. It was a one owner car in excellent condition with unusually low miles. The last two times we've had the dealership service it we've asked about a noise that the brakes were making. Both times we were told the brakes were fine and didn't need any service. Two days ago the ABS light came on. We immediately took it to the dealership. Yesterday we were told that the brake booster and actuator have gone out in the car. Turns out that Toyota issued an extended warranty for this exact repair to be done due to a manufacturers defect with the parts. It was for 10 years or 150K miles. It expired in October. My car has less than 90K miles on it! Now I have to pay $2800 to repair a manufacturers defect because Toyota refuses to fix it now. This is a known safety issue. They are doing everything they can to save money and avoid a recall. This is NOT good business. There is currently a class action lawsuit that has been filed against Toyota for this very issue. Toyota refuses to recall the product and does everything in it's power to not fix the issue. People have already been injured due to this issue. They even tell the dealerships not to fix the issue under the warranty unless the car spits out a particular code - no matter the issue someone is having with their braking system. A quick Google search will yield many testimonies from others who are part of this lawsuit who are experiencing the same issues. This is a known safety hazard due to a manufacturers defect that Toyota has known about for years. This is not a new issue and it effects several types of vehicles made by Toyota. I have made many phone calls to customer service and been told several times by different people now that this is no longer their problem. Toyota refuses to step up to the plate and fix this issue in these cars. This is not just in the Prius. They have made it abundantly clear that they DO NOT care about the safety of their consumers!

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but hesitated to respond. The contact did not recall the number of feet in stopping distance delay. The ABS warning light, traction control warning light, tire pressure warning light, and an unknown warning light were illuminated. The Brake message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake booster and the brake booster pump needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the failure was a known failure however, the extended warranty had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 139,000.

Summary of Complaint

While driving on a freeway in December 10th 2021, the ABS, Brakes and Tire pressure sensor lighted up and suddenly the brakes felt stiffed and the car did not respond as usual. Luckily I was able to move to the side, stop and make sense of what just happened. I went straight to a mechanic and got the diagnose C1391. He share the bad news, the cost to fix it would run over $2000. After further research, I found out this is an ongoing issue with many Prius specially 2011. It appears there was a customer support program related to this issue that I never heard of. Now I do, but it is too late. It will cost me serious money to fix it. This is a safety issue that can not be ignored. Toyota should be made responsible to fix it. Either they do it voluntarily or some of the owners may have no choice but to take this issue to court. It is my understanding there are some law suits filed already. We need this issue to became a recall, before someone gets hurt. I will have to consult with an attorney.

I loss the ability to see the speedometer and fuel guage on my instrument cluster. This is the same problem the 2005 to 2009 recall for non working speedometer. Spoke with Toyota and explained what are the odds that I am having the same problem they said I we get a recall we will notify you. To have this repaired it will cost around 900 out of my pocket. So I have to rely on my GPS as a speedometer

Summary of Complaint

While driving a 2011 Toyota Prius, 3 dashboard lights (ABS, Brake, and yellow) all lite up at once, making braking difficult. My daughter almost rear-ended the car in front of her. When taken to the dealership, my car had an error of C1391. There was a customer support program from Toyota "ZJB" with this exact diagnosis of issues with the brake booster, which I was never notified nor was it listed on their website. They refused to fix it as it had expired. My car has less than 100,000 miles even though their recall listed up to 150,000 miles. I've attached the Toyota dealership diagnosis and repair cost of $2969.99 which I can not afford. I'm assuming that now traction control and anti-lock braking are now non-operational making this car dangerous to drive, especially for my daughter.

Summary of Complaint

September 28, 2021 I was driving on a highway when my ABS lights, brake lights, and traction lights went on. I noticed a changed in my brakes and felt unsafe to drive . Luckily I was able to pull over. I took my car at Toyota and they confirmed its the hydraulic brake booster & pump. $2,900 for a warranty that was expired 4 weeks short. I read this is an on going problem and lawsuits about their brake systems. This should be a recall safety issue! It's unfair they allowed 2012 prius models and newer years to have theirs warranty extended to December 2021 but not the 2011 prius?? They should offer the deadline to ALL prius models or at least feel free to help out. 135k miles in and I can't believe it's worthless all because Toyota couldn't adjust they policy to extend the dates.

one year after bought, was losing power, replacing a lot of batteries, headlights and lamps then car would lose power while driving, not start continually everyday for each day after and even started on its own. i took in a lot and they put my vin to the wrong person..someone rainsford so my service recs were not recorded. said no battery code, didnt check altenator, and even tho serv advisor said the break was squishy to him and he heard the loud buzz noise when pushing, it was not replaced. they tried to blame it on keys being in car which is how it starts and runs! not parked on hill or in bad temps and driven long trips, none of which SHOULD BE REQIRED to start a car to get to dying patients on time. we bought charger and use on both priuses daily. lost power while driving, got hurt, and josh's pt. died. nothing but headache nightmares. have long written records where submitted all and they just like to deny things or try to find a way to blame on consumer. my only fault was buying an undisclosed deathtrap. they need to refund us both cars and damages and expenses and our time and missed work. the shuttle was a joke. i have my own top notch code reader and it said battery was fine. it was new, yet they wanted to sell me one so they said it coded but refused to show me. they are just trying to make money and really hurting people. sending my title and all my personal info to a stranger and me catching after 7 years broght on an ID theft im still fighting. very rude front staff and drivers..sheldon.

Summary of Complaint

My car is a well-maintained 2011 Prius 4 with only 88k miles on it. Recently the traction light, the tire pressure light, the BRAKE light, and the ABS light came on suddenly at once. I took it to my mechanic, who is a certified Prius technician, and he diagnosed it to be a defect in the brake booster and the booster pump (basically my brakes can stop working at any moment). He also mentioned that this was the 3rd Prius this week to come to his shop with this problem. A problem that is not only incredibly unsafe but costs $2,000-$3,000 to fix. One of his customers couldn't afford it or wait the week for the part to arrive and, against his advice, left with her car and is driving around with brakes that could fail at any moment. This seemed wildly unsafe for any Prius driver, so I went online for further information and I found a petition for a recall with 177 complaints and 60 car accidents because of their brakes failing. I also found that Toyota had issued a "Customer Support Program ZJB" for this very issue. Which is great except for all the Prius owners, like me, who never received notification. I know for a fact I would have gotten my Toyota looked at (and fixed) if I would have known about this. It's too risky not to. According to Toyota, there are approximately 946,100 vehicles covered by this Customer Support Program ZJB. That's 946,100+ people who have the risk of their brakes failing and they might not know about it. I know there is only so much that Toyota can be liable for but shouldn't this be a recall and fixable for all owners at all times? I asked Toyota about Customer Support Program ZJB and they informed me that my coverage expired only 14 days ago, so they can't help me. THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE SHOULD NOT HAVE AN EXPIRATION DATE. This should be fixable to all Toyota drivers regardless of when they first drove their car or some arbitrary date that Toyota created. We trust Toyota to keep us safe by buying their vehicle in the first place.

Summary of Complaint

The brake booster pump is failing, and it is available for inspection upon request. My safety is put at risk because when it fails, my breaks will become extremely difficult or impossible to apply; if the vehicle is in motion and I need to apply the brakes at the time of (or after the) failure, I will be unable to stop the vehicle safely, putting myself and others at risk of collision. The problem been reproduced and confirmed by a dealer. Besides The Toyota dealer, the vehicle or component has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There have not yet been any warning lamps or messages regarding the failing component, however I discovered the issue because of the symptom of a high frequency (every 25 seconds or so) of the whirring noise made by the leaking brake pump when it engages, without ever applying the brakes in between. Symptoms were first noticed approximately a week ago, or 4 days before taking the vehicle to the dealer.

Summary of Complaint

The 2010 Prius will suddenly develop Brake faults. The BRAKE, ABS and Traction Control lights will light up on the panel. The cars braking capacity effectively reduces to 50% and the regenerative charging also goes missing. This is an issue when the car all of a sudden would brake with half the capacity anticipated putting the occupants and others around at huge risk. Toyota does not have a plan to fix this issue yet - they would reset the code which fixes the problem but for a couple of trips / days / weeks.. an uncertain time until this happens again. Replacing brake oil, boosters and pads did not help. I am not sure what could the remedy be, please advise Toyota to investigate and create a formal recall where all effected cars could be repaired for the drivers safety.

Summary of Complaint

Around 100,000 miles the brake system has been sluggish and it appears the ABS system is failing. Currently the car has 118,617 miles and constantly exhibits sluggish and spongy braking. Hitting a pot hole or any type of bump while pressing the brakes can cause the ABS to light up temporarily and the brakes feel as if they release for 1 second and re-engage. When pressing the brakes there is a popping/air-like sound in the brake system constantly. Bleeding the brakes did not solve this issue. Through research I have discovered this is a complaint of many Prius owners about their brake actuator. It is a $1700+ part that, if fails, will cause the entire brake system to fail.

THERE WERE THREE DRIVING INSTANCES WHERE, WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES, MY BRAKE FOOT WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR. TWICE I WAS ON THE CITY STREET AND ONCE IN A PARKING SPACE. MY SPEED AT THE TIME WAS SLOW BUT THE BRAKE PEDDLE GOING TO THE FLOOR DID NOT STOP IT. NO TURN WAS INVOLVED IT DID STOP EVENTUALLY BUT THE CAR WAS CARRIED MUCH FURTHER THAN EXPECTED WITH NO BRAKING CONTROL. THE ONLY COLLISION WAS WHEN THE FRONT END HIT A LOG IN MY HOME PARKING AREA. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER'S SERVICE DEPT., BUT AFTER 4 HOURS, I WAS TOLD, "COULD NOT DUPLICATE CONCERN CUSTOMER WILL HAVE TO RETURN WHEN FAULT IS CURRENT". THEY DROVE IT AND USED THEIR COMPUTER BUT NOTHING FAULTY WAS EVIDENT. I WAS SENT OFF IN THE CAR. WITH AN INTERMITTENT FAILURE, IT WASN'T LIKELY. SO, NOW I HAVE A CAR I DON''T DARE TO DRIVE AND WON'T SELL BECAUSE IT'S A HAZARD!
